Phanto,

there are some physics that explain why a ball swings in cricket, basically there's a "rough" side and a "smooth/shiney" side. Are you suggesting someone is shining only one side of the football or perhaps someone is taking a bottle cap to one side of the ball?

Perhaps it has something more to do with Malcolm Blight's left handed and right handed footballs.
Yes but Rosy a new ball is shiny on both sides and swings a lot more than when it is roughed up a bit later until real late when the bal lreverses then the swing is more dramatic.

Good point sorry Rosy. I meant general, one of those days.

Re: Set shots at goal

The new ball swings by using the seam to create drag, so yes it does swing more.

In the bad old days, the captain of our cricket club would put about 12 litres of sunscreen on his forehead. When he started to sweat, he'd rub the ball on his forehead on one side and we'd get this mangled up half a cricket ball, and the smoothest babies bottom on the other half.
I'd be able to swing the ball huge amounts, which was good fun for the first few overs until the batsmen got used to it.

Anyone with the right action should be able to swing a cricket ball, new or old, provided you look after it.

I agree most of the time however with four pieces not always as easy if the conditions are not right with a ball 10 - 40 overs old at pace. After that it usually reverses

Re: Set shots at goal

Physics will always be able to explain these things given enough variables (friction, drag, viscosity - it was wet afterall, thermodynamics), which there are too many of to actually carry out the pointless excercise which would take the fun out of the art anyway. And ya canna change tha laws o' physics!

Anyway, maybe the best theory is "practice makes perfect"!

Re: Set shots at goal

The extremely frustrating thing is how often our right footers end up with a set shot on the left footer's side... happened a ridiculous amount of times on Friday night, and was a significant factor in our inaccuracy.

I prefer "Perfect practice makes perfect" ;)

What's Pettifer on?

Not knocking his efforts but WTF is going on with his set kicking routine lately?

Someone needs to whisper in his ear that the game is not basketball and there is no 10 second shot clock in operation. His current approach is more like Johnny Howard power walking after overdosing on caffeine.

Give him whatever Richo now takes to control his dummy spitting  :P

Re: What's Pettifer on?

I wouldn't care if he kicked it over his head so long as it worked.

Re: What's Pettifer on?

Woops. I've found this topic has already been covered in depth under "Set shots".
