Shane Tuck Award 2008

Shane Tuck Award began in 2004.

Initially, It was basically the "hard-luck" award, or the "coach didn't give you a fair go" award.

This year, the criteria is the player that overcame the highest obstacles or adversity to win senior selection.

Three nominations - Jackson, Connors and Polo

Jackson because he's been jerked around all over the place and not given a chance to cement a spot.
Connors because he was left at Coburg but named in the best so often. Unfit/bad attitude huh
Polo because he has been left at Coburg for most of the year after a bad senior game or two early.

hmm the ones who clearly were not given a decent go were connors rance yes rance should have played a handful of games collins and polo. these blokes were kicked in the head all yr.

lol at bowden just because he got dropped for a couple of games. i see terry stopped trying to reinvent him and he ended up in the backline taking a kids spot.
moore jackson lol how many opportunities have they been given to show what they have, no i dont see them not being given a fair go.
did foley win it one yr i hope so. wallace just wouldnt give him a game even when getting over 40 possesions a game each week at coburg. and when he finally did play him hed get minimal game time but still pick up 20 possesions.

And your vote is Claw...........?

lol at Bowden you may, Claw. I just can't remember anyone handling being dropped at that stage of their career that well ie. responding with some match-winning efforts.

Considering he had OP in the pre-season, I would have to give my vote to Luke McGuane.

he got dropped for a reason. spineless insipid selfish performances dont sit to well with me. how many games was he given before he got dropped. *smile* has been given every opportunity under the sun.

tough question out of collins or connors.

Is this based on the games you've seen him play at Coburg? Same with Rance? Given they've had their collective heads kicked in.

Luke McGuane or Daniel Jackson for me.

McGuane has come on in leaps and bounds and Jackson has, in the last month, saved his career
Ah, another chance to bash Jacko.....how after five years as a fringe player has jackson saved his career.
His pace and peripheral vision and decision making are terrible.....he is slower than a pregnant turtle...has the turning circle of a Humvee and makes a decision about as quick as a school teacher.

lol at Bowden you may. He was deservedly dropped and he could have done a gaspar. Instead he worked hard enough at Coburg to re-earn a position, then played a strong role in the side for the rest of the year.

Keep in mind that this isn't an award for the best decision in terms of the list and player development, it is an award for a player showing determination in the face of adversity. Bowden isn't out of place in the candidates on that criteria.

Not sure why you were so suprised, he's done it before.

No not to the same extent. This time he wasn't just asked to find form but asked to play a completely different style and to my knowledge he hasn't played forward before either, wing was his old pre-defence position, many years ago. Also at 29 you just expect and start to look for a player to "decline" to just not be quite as good as they used to be relative to the younger players around them.

So no I didn't expect him to overcome that lot and to do so to the extent that that there just stopped being negative posts about him I found really surprising - and this is why I nominated him.

On Bowden, something leysy's wanted to bring up.

Has anyone noticed how much weight he lost as the year went on.

He'd been hitting the weights bulking up for the key back role for the past what, 5 years.

Since his change of role he's dropped plenty. & hasnt it helped his mobility. He's found a yard. Maybe three.

Yeh Jole deserves credit for bouncing back and I think he should spend more time up forward.
His meandering out of defence just stops our momentum and he never...never...never tries to take a risk or break a line...always ait or the safe option which most times is sideways or backwards.
Saying that he does have reliabiity and is a good pinch hitter in the forward line.
However is their room for him and Browny there.?

Just to ensure formalities are kept in place, pleased to announce Kel Moore as winner of the 2008 Shane Tuck Award.

Placings were:
1. Kel Moore (by half the straight)
2. Luke McGuane
3. Daniel Connors

The Shane Tuck Honour Board now reads:

2004 Shane Tuck - inaugural
2005 Nathan Foley
2006 Cam Howat
2007 Matt White
2008 Kel Moore

Congratulations Kel!

Please note, the Shane Tuck Award does not guarantee football immortality.
It has evolved to represent triumph over adversity.

I'd rather ask the question how did Cam Howat win it in 2006?

Well done to Kel, great season showing he finally stepped up with good consistent games. Let's hope he builds on it next year and doesn't make this season a one-off performance.

Just wondering, how did Connors get a place? He played about 2 games and wasn't fit due to not doing much of a pre-season.

Well done to Kel Moore, well deserved and a big hole down back as now disappeared  :clap

There were 4 PRE posters who voted for him.

Closer scrutiny of Howat's 2006 season indicate that his VFL performances warranted more than the handful of AFL games that he played.
Cam did go on to play 15 games in 2007.

Although the VFL have limited stats.

Congratulations to Kel for winning this prestigious award. Players asked if they'd prefer a GF or a Brownlow have been rumoured to have replied none of the above, they'd prefer to take Shane home.
