ATM Grigg win, Houli loss Giar.

Leysy expects Collins' production for Carlton to be somewhere in between those two. Grigg we've found his role (inside mid) that he wasnt given at Carlton so expect he'll be a solid pickup. Who's to say who the PSD selection would have been for us.

Saying that Leysy's not a Houli fan though & doesnt expect him to be part of our long term future.
Are there any players taken after Houli and up to Jakobi that you would prefer to Houli?

Grigg was showing some really strong form at the end of last year for the Blues, his game against Freo in particular in round 22 I would have thought marked his as an ideal for the WCE midfield. He’s young and entering his prime.

Luke was on a big contract, had injury issues and even then the Pies had to give up a reasonable draft pick for him.

I understand you missing Andy, I was a fan too, but I don’t think we could have got Grigg in the PSD.

He only played 8 games last year & 10 the year before & & as a 22 year old wallowed in the VFL for most of the year Col. Demand wouldn't have been huge for the guy. Especially considering our generous multi-year contract would have had to have been matched. It is also extremely rare for clubs to draft a player against his wishes. i.e West Coast PSD. Almost non-existant actually.

On his first couple of showings it appears we have done very well targetting a guy for a role which he wasn't playing regularly. Hopefully he keeps his form up.

I watched quite a bit of tape of Grigg last year after we showed an interest, even a chump like me could tell he played some really good football for Carlton but he has fish out of water in the gameplan. A proper AFL scout would have been all over his potential with different coaching.
If I was the WCE and he was going into the PSD I would have thrown a lot at him to get him over. To be honest I think Grigg wanted out of Ratten’s coaching, and would have gone anywhere that really wanted him.. as much as I would like to believe he came over because of his love for the RFC.

Not so sure about that. At the time was no more than a fringe player at Carlton remember. Typically when those types go in the draft with decent $$$ on there head & importantly with one club they've nominated to go to they just about without fail get there.

Even good players like Luke Ball get looked over by the non-nominated clubs in that scenario.
Ball was taken in the National Draft at what pick 20 something. No other club was going to touch him before then. The PSD would have been a different story.

Re: Collins for Grigg (Merged)

Dont think any would have touched him IanG.

He made it very clear (as many players do these days) by singling out Collingwood as the club of his choice. He wouldnt talk to other clubs.

He also had a high price on his head. Upwards of $400K a year.

Easy to say in hindsight Leysy, but if you recall the draft commentary, I was listening to SEN, it was a long way from a sure thing.

Probably Collingwood $1.60 and Melbourne about $4.80 at a rough guess. The powers that be at the Tigers didn't want to roll the dice for Grigg even if the odds were heavily in our favour.

Re: Collins for Grigg (Merged)

It is apples and oranges to comapre Grigg and Ball from a draft pick perspective. Melbourne looked at drafting Ball but would have had to spend pick 18 (who turned into Luke Tapscot) to get him ahead of the Pies at pick 30

For Gold Coast or West Coast to get him in the PSD they would have been choosing between Nathan Ablett, Blayne Wilson or Grigg. One of these players is much better than the others. Maybe Grigg goes back to Carlton if he thinks he's going to be drafted by one of the interstate teams. Young guys who proven AFL track records don't make it to the PSD unless no one else wants them.

And while Grigg only played 8 games last year he averaged nearly 22 possesions a game so he clearly wasn't chopped liver.

Re: Collins for Grigg (Merged)

How many blokes get best on ground in there 2nd game for a new club??
Has been very good and has done exactly what has been required, free up Martin.

Houli is the same age & averaged 20 possessions a game last year & 22 the year before & got through fine Big Ty.

Point is that almost regardless of the talent of the player, almost without exception clubs wont draft guys to their club that dont want to be there.

Re: Collins for Grigg (Merged)

i think Carlton have left themselves light on for tough inside players. Murphy and the other midfielders aren't the tough types of players you need come finals. Apart from Judd i don't see any of the unsocialable footballers you need to win finals.

i can see the team Dimma is trying to forge, a tough uncompromising group that will stand up to finals football. i'm still enjoying the ride with this team and what is it, 18 months into his tenure and already i can see players like Grigg, Helbig, Cotchin, Batchelor and others really embracing a tougher style of play. We have the youngest team being fielded for games played and we seem to be heading in a very good direction.

Re: Collins for Grigg (Merged)

I'm surprised (and extremely pleaseed) at how quickly Grigg has slotted into our club, it's not often it happens so smoothly when a player moves across to a new club.

One of my favourite players. ;)

Andrew Walker was keen to go back to South Australia, Will Thursfield was keen to find a new club among others. Where players can't find a suitable trade they often re-sign than risk the draft. In the absence of evidence that Grigg would have made it to us in the PSD I think we made the right decision.

Re: Collins for Grigg (Merged)

Good luck to him. Hard task first up against the premiers and he's still only a kid. Probably get Shaw or someone similar.

Would rather Beaker than Houli that's for sure.

It is a decent point, but not sure of the validity of your examples for players staying at there current clubs once suitable trades were unable to be found. They were both under contract so had to stay.
