Anyone remember it? He won 1 out of the first 6 and was actually thinking of putting the boots back on to lead from the front. The whispers that he was a dud as coach where spreading and the knives were being sharpened. Dons then won 15 straight to fnsh on 16 wins but that only got fourth. Knocked out at Waverley in an elimination final by Fitzroy in a thriller with I think Micky Conlan delivering the killer blow in time on!

Order was resored next year with tiges dominant all year but cruelled by a dogmatic Bourke and injury (and McConville treachery) in the GF.

Dons then played in the next three GFs winning 2.

Soooo...you expect Wallace to don the boots and get back out there to show these duds how to hit a target and make a decision? ;D

Five years out mate on the Elimination Micky Conlan goal, that was 1986 on a wet Waverly Park but you are right about Sheeds first six games in 1981 and they did get knocked out by Fitzroy in the first week of the finals by 15 points. Big Bernie probably did the damage that day.

Bruce Tempany was one of my favourites aswell. Some of our lesser knows in those days like Terry Smith and Bruce Tempany were so good for us. Then again I still have fond memories of Ian Scrimshaw and Phillip Bottoms.

Amazing how a bloke like Bourke can become coach and then talk schoolmaster like to experienced players like Malthouse and Cloke.

He used to give Weightman a hard time.

Gee amazing what tricks the memory gets into. I had morphed 1986 into 1981. BTW love your nick. Landy was one of my favourites. Everyone loved the ghost and Merv was playing modern footy back 30 years ago. Look at some of teh old tapes and Merv is the one that never misses a target and had the neat skills while even our champs scrubbed kicks here there and everywhere. One of the first picked week in week out and virtually ignored by everyone outside Richmond. I'd take that half back line on Sat'day!

Cheers mate. The only reason I remember it was 1986 is that fact that I felt guilty putting aside HSC study to listen to it.

Strange how we remember dates of football games by small associations like that.

Yeah, next to the line of Lee Wiley Weightman it must be my favourite line. Loved seeing it in the Herald Sun on Friday.

Landy was a great pickup from Geelong (Handy Landy) although I think we suffered by trying to replicate taking experienced seemingly underrated players who would thrive under Richmonds culture beyond 1982 (i,.e Paul Sarah and the host of other duds)

Jess would beat the rolling zones of today by his monster kicks and Merv Keane was a fantastic player not rated as highly outside of Richmond as he should of been.

Along with Mick Malthouse Francis Bourke and Strachnie (Yes we had our own Greg Strachan) it was one tough backline although not the quickest.

Could you refresh my memory on this McConville treachery?

If I remember from previous posts...

kicked Tempany's outstreched arm while he was on the ground, breaking it...right in front of Phantom, who has never forgiven that dog McC (nor should he)

Yes, I remember.

Remember Sheeds also threatening to put on the boots again and go out onto the field with the players.

Don't have any problems with Sheed's first year because it was his first year. There's the coach getting used to the players, new procedures & game plans.

But I don't think a coach who has been at the helm for 5 years can get away with that one.

Was at the game, but a bit sketchy on the details. Can remember him walking around the boundary with his arm in a sling. Considering Bruce played at my club, and his old man coached me for many years.....an act like that should never be forgiven or forgotten.

Bruce's son is schoolmates with my son, I asked Bruce about that very thing a few weeks ago, he said it was 100% accidental. Still-in matters involving Carlton treachery, I'm inclined to go with a good story rather than the reality.

He was a bit stiff in finals, broke something else in the 2nd semi in 1980 so missed that flag.

BTW his kid is a gun.....but Bruce didn't get to 100 games. :(

Never hurts to have another reason to hate Carlton, even though it was an accident ;)

Pity Bruce didn't get to 100....could have been a handy FS pick-up.

From what I've heard today... the players wouldn't kick it to him! :o

And even if they did try, you can bet that they would miss!

So 16-6 win ratio and top 4 finish not good enough for Terry then?
