Some of you may have seen the Ted Richards deal go up on the board yesterday.

Richards & pick 55 for pick 19 & 51. I, for one, was left wondering why effectively swap pick 55 for pick 51? How much of a difference could it make? I went to bed last night still pondering the reason.

(You know, just when I think that I know something of the inner workings of footy, I suddenly get blown out of the water by a true genius at work.)

The Jay Neagle father/son pick. AFL rules say a 3rd round pick must be used for a father/son choice.

Pick 55 is a 4th round pick. Pick 51 is a 3rd round pick. With the Dons picking up pick 51, they can use it on Jay Neagle, which meant their pick 39 which would have been used for Neagle now becomes free to select another junior.
Ie, they've effectively picked up Neagle, father/son, on a 4th round draft pick.

Sheer genius!

Just when you think Sheeds might be getting a bit long in the tooth, he pulls the classic con. "Old shady Sheedy!"

Sheer genius!

Very clever by Sheeds, very good. Although reports have stated that Essendon must commit there original 3rd rounder. But sheeds may get away with and force a rule change. Well done Sheeds. Life isn't about breaking the rules, it's about finding ways to make them work for you.

As much as i hate to say this, this thread has appeared on BLOS.

The someone from the afl was on 3aw last night and told them that Essendon must use pick 39.

Seems as though Sheedy isn't as clever as we may have thought.

I hate it when they make sense over there. Also, is there any other footy forums/richmond forums that are worth reading??? Now i know that we are the biggest and best, but there must be some that speak an ounce of logic

Yep apparently the rules state that if you are playing for a father son you cannot trade the third round draft pick that you acquired from ladder position.

So the bombers have to use 39 and in the case they were taking 2 father sons - they could not trade their 2 or 3 round picks.......

Hope that makes sense.

Yo  bravetiger, and good morning!Already 30 degreesC up here and its only 9.15!
Two lessons ive learnt in life...
1......ya gotta know the rules before you can break em....
2......Sheeds is no fool......And,i reckon the message board is full of good mail and very learned people!Had a peek at bomberblitz the other day....
Just like jack dyer said once....bomber fans are just collingwood fanns who can talk read...... :-X

it just means they get their fourth round pick now ahead of Carlton, Hawthorn, Collingwood -

a small but possibly significant difference ...

I don't think they've done that. They haven't traded the third draft pick that they acquired from their ladder position, they've traded their 4th pick for an additional 3rd.

The test will be if the AFL rules state that a father/son pick must be used with the third draft pick that they acquired from their ladder position. This may, or may not, be the case. I don't know. If Sheeds has found a loophole, good on him.

If the rules are any representation of the haphazard way Demetriou has dealt with other matters before, then my guess is that the loophole is the size of a chasm.

Whatever the end, it will certainly make for some controversy well after the trading week has ended. Still plenty of time between now and the draft. Might even end up in the court.

Gee, footy makes for classic drama.

Shady Sheedy, I love it Michael!   ;D

That's what Mike Williamson called him during his commentary of the 1973 Grand Final, Old Shady Sheedy. I think it was when he overacted for a free against Phil Pinnell. Might have even been '69.

Credit goes to Mike Williamson.
