PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Some of you may have seen the Ted Richards deal go up on the board yesterday.

Richards & pick 55 for pick 19 & 51. I, for one, was left wondering why effectively swap pick 55 for pick 51? How much of a difference could it make? I went to bed last night still pondering the reason.

(You know, just when I think that I know something of the inner workings of footy, I suddenly get blown out of the water by a true genius at work.)

The Jay Neagle father/son pick. AFL rules say a 3rd round pick must be used for a father/son choice.

Pick 55 is a 4th round pick. Pick 51 is a 3rd round pick. With the Dons picking up pick 51, they can use it on Jay Neagle, which meant their pick 39 which would have been used for Neagle now becomes free to select another junior.
Ie, they've effectively picked up Neagle, father/son, on a 4th round draft pick.

Sheer genius!

Just when you think Sheeds might be getting a bit long in the tooth, he pulls the classic con. "Old shady Sheedy!"
