Shopping list for next year

Ok we need to go shopping at the end of the year for young blokes so what do we think the Tigers need?

I'd be going for a high quality young ruckman (with a bit of meat on him) that we could develop and call on in emergencies.
Atleast 1 but hopefully 2 high quality midfielders.(young blokes not recycled)
We MUST get a back up full back, be that as a trade or a young kid I don't care.
And also another young bloke to be groomed for CHF or CHB.
Apart from the above I'd expect to sign one or 2 quality players from other clubs and select 'best available' with any other picks. We will finally have money and spots on the list to get what we want!! Hopefully we take full advantage of that!!
What would you guys like to see??

Yep just talls and midfielders , no *smile* flankers please.
Plus we better not trade our priority pick ;)

If we do try and get a top line established player try to get him without giving up a top 20 pick. The trouble is who at richmond is good enough to trade for a very good player and at the same time someone we can afford to lose? Bowden springs to mind anyone else?

Well we got Blumfield with pick 28 and I'd expect more bargains like that next year as the squeeze on player payments continues. And hopefully this comes with the added bonus of US getting paid for some of that players contract rather than the other way around.(aren't the bummers paying part of JB's??)

Well, after we cull about 10 players from our list at the end of the year, we should have quite a bit of cash to play with. I'd shoot for the best talent available, regardless of position; there isn't a position in the whole team that any player holds with so much authority that he could not be replaced if the right personnel were available.

having said that, i agree with Tigerdog that we seem particularly thin with regards to key position backmen. If Holland or *smile* are injured we will really struggle. VARDY IS NOT AN OPTION. So a key position backmen would be nice. A strong built tap-ruckman is also needed.

Gaspar, Holland and Richo will all be reaching nursing-home status in three year's time. As it takes that long for a young big man to build up to AFL level, we need to recruit for then. We must take a couple of talls from the juniors to be groomed for the post-Richo era. If we don't think ahead now, we'll be stuffed then. I don't like the idea of poaching other team's players. This time let's do it right and build from the ground up.

I always think the best way to improve the list year on year, is to get the best kids available, and get on or two thru trades from other clubs to fill holes.

My immediate wish - strong kids who have skill, Don't have to be standouts in TAC. Height of 190+ in some of those. No flankers please...True midfielders or key position. V important for these kids to have ability to put on some size. We seem to get kids who refuse to muscle up.

Recycled - players I think will be up for grabs include Brent Guerra from Port. Can play, but limited opportunities. Would be a walk up start in our midfield. A tall defender such as Jade Rawlings (not necessarily him) to bolster defence. The main thing for recycled players is to get guys from successful organisations. Kane and Blumfield were great pickups in this regard.

I wonder if we had pick two in the Johnson trade, who else would have the crows given up? I reckon Matt Clarke may have been in that mix - would have been nice.......... ;D

Fair enough you call on a ruckman, and 2 defensive key position players. I absolutely agree there. These 3 can fill the 3 already vacant places on the list.

With Dunc and Rogers either veterened or less likely, delisted, we have room for your 2 gun midfielders. If we are still drafting at this point then they will be picks in rounds 4 and 5. You apparently presume this next draft will be quite deep

And trade 1 or 2 quality players from elsewhere ? Well depends what/who you have in mind as bait.
Be warned that no-one wants our junk unless a good pick is involved. Remember Bourke and Daffy ? Any good player we pick up will cost us a pick already spoken for above. Or cost us a player we probably want. That's what happened with Torney.

Assume Cameron doesn't retire as he has indicated. Probably delist Biddiscombe. If King has a better year we may be able to get a 5th, 6th rounder for him.

There are few players Richmond would want to trade THAT other clubs would want....and vise versa. We want to keep all the players that other clubs want.

i'd skip trading and draft 6-7 kids(the 3 talls in the first 3 rounds )...vet'n dunc/rogers and delist bidders and king. Maybe keep King if he has a bettter year.

PS : one of our rookies may do alright and get an upgrade.

ciao

PS-DASH Pace, skill, determination, attitude, stamina, hardness....... and a fullback.
Don't forget the addded trade value our guys will have as premiership players. ;D
Go Tiges.

We obviously need more talls/KPs on our list. Having only 9 is ridiculous as we found out last year and with Otto's back injury now. As long as we don't go tall-happy crazy (we seem to have a habit of going overboard in correcting a perceived deficiency) we should go for the best draftee available when it's our turn to pick.

Retirements
Cameron-great servant to the afl but this year will be his last.
D.Kellaway-like cameron a great servant to the club but his body wont be able take anymore.

delisted
biddescombe-no more fat cheques for you!

on very thin ice
mills-make every step a winner or else.
vardy-time to step up will have enough chances.
houlihan-has all the talent in the world but no application.
pettifer-time to step up.no more excuse,s
king-not as effective as 2 yrs ago

trade bait
bowden-contunues the way he does it will be time to trade him.
tivendale-already had a boot up the butt.learn to play 4 qtrs if not some other sucker can try and teach you this.

*smile*-way out of left field i know but think about it.all depending on how *smile* goes this year and what will be in the draft and a certain chris judd wanting to come home.i have no problem with *smile* as far as his playing abilty goes he does his job however he does hurt us with his foot skills.
we win with our salary cap and strengthen our midfeild even further.
however like i said it all depends on a number of factors.

My dream is: to have a full list. Yep no vacancies. And definately no more drafting of ageing stop-gap hacks like (Hudson, Sziller and co.)

As Michael Jackson says: "The kids are our future"

or was that Krusty the Clown. I'm not sure?

i remember whitney houston sang a line from one of her songs which I think was called 'the greatest love ':

the line was 'i believe the children are the future'.

clearly she should be on the phone to greg beck...but i doubt our sponsors would be happy taking into account the rap sheet her husband has put together...
excuse me : time for my needle.

"I believe the children are our feature" - Best version is by Eddie Murphy in his band Sexual Chocolate in coming to America. good lorrrddd.............

At the end of this year I would hope/expect the following has happened;

Delisted / Retired...... Biddiscombe, Rogers, D Kella, Mills, Vardy, King, Cameron......this will free up a heap of money.

Vets List....Campbell and Richo. Half of Richo's wage is about $250k - $300k.

I would use one of our top 3 picks to trade for a quality player. Not a goalsneak, but a ruck / key position or midfielder. Chris Judd has refused to resign with W.Coast so maybe something there to think about. A player of his ability is worth while throwing the farm at.

With the draft picks, the club HAS TO ATTEMPT to find the next Andrew McLeod. Until we get that kind of game dominating midfielder, we will never get past semi's. I know they don't grow on trees, but they are out there.

'feature' ? Really ? well there you go i stand corrected...do you do james Reyne translations ?
BTW : whatever happened to Nitro tiger ?

Richo won't qualify till 2006.

Sure but WCE will want out top pick, maybe our 2nd too, and a very decent player.    But, I have no objections in having him.

The next Andrew McLeod ?   He's already here...name is David Rodan.

Priority is to get a ruckman and 2 key possies.
Start planning for life after Stafford /Richo/A.K/Gaspar/Holland....

I agree with you on both points Tro-boy IMO Bowdo is unfairly treated by a majority of supporters.
But Tivendale could be used as trade bait depending on the year he has.And also as I have stated in his player review IMO Holland has had one good year for us and if a ready made replacement could be traded for I'd have no problems with that.
I wouldn't be surprised if Cameron has a good year he may go on but like alot of others say Houlihan King Biddiscombe Vardy Rogers and perhaps Millsy and D Kellaway could all be end of year casualties.

Totally agree that's why I was so disappointed we didn't get an 18yo ruckmen and a couple of key position players this year but hopefully that'll be fixed next year.
I have often wondered where the Hell we will find the next Richo? Not an easy task.
Full backs are hard to find also but we have to get one to begin developing him for a couple of years time.On this I was thinking that FB are often made into that after joining the club. How many FBs got recruited from the under age comps? Aren't they usually taken as decent sized kids with good abilities that played CHF or FF or CHF or whatever and then moulded to FB slowly??
Also agree with MightyTiges
As long as we don't go tall-happy crazy (we seem to have a habit of going overboard in correcting a perceived deficiency)
but I think with Miller at the helm we will finally draft and trade very shrewdly and ultimately get the things we all seem to have been able to see for years.

Hey Rodan 18, thanks for the pick up on "feature", as I am sure you realised I meant "future". If you have seen "Coming to America" you will know what I mean..

With the vets list, I have been told or heard of ammendments to the vets list, as so many guys are reaching 10 years service at age 27 / 28 that it makes the Vets almost impossible to reward clubs for having older guys on the list. Maybe I was dreaming.

I have no doubt that Rodan will be a great player and I have a feeling he will have some blinders this year, but I think his lack of height and penetration by foot will stop him being a really dominant midfielder in the McLeod / Crawford / Buckley mould.

Priority is to get a ruckman and 2 key possies. Start planning for life after Stafford /Richo/A.K/Gaspar/Holland....

Agree R18, but that should be the job of every footy dept. One eye on the future, and one eye on the now.
