Should we be using our 4th ND pick?

As I see it, the biggest risk with rookies is that you are choosing them at the wrong end of the draft, from a shrinking base.  By the time our 5th round rookie choice come around there will have been about 60 players taken in the ND, another 10 or so in PSD, and three rounds of rookie draft, Brisbane/Syd local rookies etc, around another 70-80 players.  The chances of finding a decent player are pretty slim and it probably isn't worth taking the punt.

However, over two or three years we need to get the rookie list up and running so that we can give a couple of players a second year on the rookie list and top up with just 2 or 3 choices.  If we take 4 this year and keep 3 of them on the rookie list next year we will be able to top up again in the early rounds only.

For team balance, we really should have tried to keep Thursfield on the rookie list for another year and upgraded him at the first opportunity.  This would give us an earlier choice and a better chance of a good player.

Don't agree. I saw in the movements this year that a player rejected being "invited" to spend another year on the rookie list. It would appear that while two years as a rookie is a maximum it isn't like being contracted for two years after the ND, the rookies don't have to accept the second year. I think Thursfield proved himself capable and therefore why should he accept another year on crap money with Richmond as a rookie? I suppose its a negotiation like everything else. We needed Thursfield to stay at the club more than he needed another year on a rookie listing. He'd have been snapped up in the PSD. Not saying Thursfield twisted the club's arm - just saying that its not so easy for the club to play God as you have suggested Tot0. The club probably just did what was realistic. He's good enough to be on our list and maybe even to be in our first team therefore he is no longer a rookie.

What do you guys reckon of some of the Coburg listed players?  In Inside Football they mentioned 5 or six as possible roughies, big Rix, Jarrod Sylvester, Rimmington, a young ruckman and another fella whoese name also escapes me?

All not good enough for AFL level no way near it absolutely not good enough and if we take one as a rookie i am giving Richmond away and barracking for NRL full time.
