lambswool i am going to concede this debate to you FOR NOW. Just while i have a good long look at what has been said and compose my reply as lucidly as possible.just on your simmonds knobel hall scenario though. hall has never been a ruckman not a real ruckmman anyway. chb maybe.and wallace may have only been around 3yrs but he has had 4 drafts.
the 2004 nd and psd netted us simmonds a 27 yo ruckman already in the senior close to veteran category. in the psd we took knobel a very good tap ruckman but deficient in nearly all other areas. these two were bought to the club to help our sole surviving injury prone 31yo soon to be retired ruckman who played mainly in a forward pocket stafford. when you look at this what does it scream at you. stuck for an answer. well we clearly needed a highly rated junior wood, and a speculative development ruck ala graham in 2006. yet we never got another ruckman on the list until graham thru the rookie draft in 2006. it got so bad we played 189cm players in the ruck and threw a highly speculative rookie to the wolves. we played our chb there as well.
if a genuine ruckman l;ike wood had been taken in 2004 like he should of been we would hnow have a genuine young ruckman who has had 3 yrs with his last yr 3rd in fast track mode. wallace didnt recruit simmonds and knobel with a view to protecting and developing juniors we didnt have any junior ruckmen on the list to bloody develop. knobel and simmonds fixed one immediate problem that being we didnt have any ruckmen on the list.
we are now in the situation where the only ruckmen we have on the list is 30yo simmonds. graham very raw coming of the rookie list. putt pick 51 in a shallow draft in his first yr which will probably be spent between coburg and coburg reserves. and cartledge who is on the rookie list. the point i am trying to make is we should have 2 young ruckmen who are entering their 4th yrs this yr. the fact that 2 ruckmen have been taken this yr speaks volumes.its taken him 4 drafts to take a ruckman in the nd in an area we were chronically deficient in when he first came. :
gaspar the end of 2004 every man and his dog knew the end was near for gaspar. we also had an undersized more flanker than kpp in kellaway. we had on the list archibald a speculative late pick about pick 89 who at least had size. we rookied will thursfield and things were that bad as far as kpd goes we took mark graham at pick 65 for one yr. it was acknowledged by wallace graham was taken because we just didnt have the numbers he also mumbled something about graham helping the young kpd i askl what young kpd did we have on the list proper. are you telling me he was punting on a rookie. come the end of 2005 what happens archibald and graham go and thusfield is promoted we go backwards. all thius leaves is kellaway gaspar and thursfield. its about now wallace comes up with the idea out of desperation to turn mcguane into a backman.
the end of 2006 comes kellaway is forced to retire and is replaced with polak we still have just potentially and potentially is the apt word 4 kpd on the entire list when we should have a minimum of 6 and knowing gaspar is for the chop in the not to distant future.
come 2007 gaspar walks polak mcguane and thursfield coming of a knee is it its a disgrace.
as far as i can see ive made no contradictioni argue with just a tiny bit of common sense we would have in the system after 4 drafts 6 kpd at various stages of development. we now have 5 and you could argue we dont have 5 kpds. they are polak is not a kpd. mcguane skills may end his career. gourdis a psd pick who is a forward we are going to attempt to turn into a defender. rance who is a good prospect not elite. thursfield skinny not suited to strength situations. again the wy we have gone about it is a disgrace.what happens if say polak and thursfield go down with long term injury. you gonna throw rance and gourdis in the deep end geez im all for playing kids but that is ridiculous.
im not arguing wallace should go i am stating he has got plenty wrong though and i am concerned he isnt learning from his mistakes.
