KEVIN Sheedy's decision to put his hand up for the Richmond coaching job next year has been met with mixed reaction among the Tiger faithful.
Richmond supporters yesterday flooded internet forums with debate over the merits of the legendary coach taking charge at Punt Rd.
Sheedy officially declared his interest in the coaching post at his old club in yesterday's Herald Sun, saying: "I can help Richmond".
Richmond cheer squad president David Norman backed Sheedy as a candidate.
"He's a Tiger man, he's got a proven track record, we could certainly do a lot worse," Norman told the Herald Sun.
"He has got 27 years of coaching experience and an absolute passion for the Richmond Football Club.
"We could do a damn sight worse and, let's face it, in the past Richmond have."
Norman said he favoured an experienced coach stepping into the hot seat.
"If it was up to me, I would certainly like someone who has been in charge of a team," he said.
"Whether that's at VFL level, or WAFL level or SANFL, or up the bush somewhere, but somewhere where they have actually had the buck stop with them.
"I'm not privy to what all these assistant coaches are about. You've got to rely on the process.
"But I tell you what, I wouldn't be upset if it was Sheeds."
But others on prominent Richmond online forum Punt Road End urged caution, telling the club to stick to its selection process.
"It's all about the process Kev," Smoking Aces wrote.
"If you are up to it, then join at the back of the queue. Go through the interview process just like the other candidates.
"If you are chosen as the best then good luck to you. Please no more short cuts RFC. Remember the word 'exhaustive'."
The romance of Sheedy returning to Richmond had some supporters excited.
"We need a happy ending, maybe this is it, people," Jamo said.
"I don't believe in fairytales, but I have a feeling that Sheedy may be the white knight, maybe we need to think outside the square a bit."
Meanwhile, Magpies coach Mick Malthouse has said he would be comfortable working with Nathan Buckley as his assistant at Collingwood next season.
"Oh, absolutely. Nathan's my assistant coach with the Irish (International Rules) side," Malthouse told the AFL website.
"Contrary to what people want to believe, I get on very well with Nathan and I always have."
