So what if we finish 9th...it's different this time !

Big statement. How many big scores against them this year? And multiple goal scorers? A bloke kicks 8 one week and you reckon they are overrated? Everyone gets towelled at one point or another.

Of course it helps your backline if your midfield is winning the ball but Harley/Scarlett/Egan/Milburn are possibly the best 4 defenders in the league.

I'm not suggesting we get rid of them just that we recruit one real FB/CHB to compliment them.

Remember when Glass was the best FB back in the league and Hunter was a gun? Now even our Jack slaps them around.

Ok maybe not 'vastly'. There're definitely overall a very strong backline, but the ball has gone in their defensive 49 less times than the second best defensive team.

Yes clearly the Geelong boys are struggling with their bulk. And as you say their strength is now redundant. You've really nailed it zero. Stop those summer weights sessions now before we get too big......
Helps when you have GAJ, Bartel, Corey, Ling, Enright & Selwood in the midfield. Amazing how good a defence looks when you have the best midfield in the league. West Coast was the same when they had Judd, Cousins, Kerr, Fletcher, Braun, etc in theirs, but it looks pretty average now doesn't it?

Point taken. Agree that your defence can be made to look silly if the supply is overwhelming but come finals time I'd like a big intimidating, talented backline because there is normally a lot more pressure on the ball carrier in finals games and more one on one contests (excluding PA 2007)

Leo Barry is not in the top 5 FB and never has been. Imagine how damaging he could have been on a lesser opponent?

Two-time All Aus player says to leysy he must have been an alright key defender BCL. Incidentally it was only after being given the responsibility to play as a key position player did his career take off. Makes your above call rather silly.

Is it possible players can use there athleticism to advantage when playing on larger slower players, many cases say yes.

Your eyes say a short bloke can play KP do they? You sure you're not short-sighted? ;) Name me the successful small KP players in recent history?

Craig Bolton, Dale Morris, Kelvin Moore, Joel Patfull, Sam Fisher etc rolled off leysy head that are all 191cm or below & have been very very good in key roles down back this season. Would say thats not being short-sighted BCL....

Note: North also seem to do alright with none of Gibson, Pratt or Firrito greater than 190cm. As leysy's said many times it takes a whole host of abilities to play as a key back, height being just one. Others include - agility, reading the play, balance, 2nd efforts, strong in a contest - both overhead & over the ball & poise.

I'm talking about building a long-term powerhouse backline that intimidates the opposition. Rance in one of the key posts, hopefully another 6ft 4 plus guy in the other with Moore/Thursfield/McGuane and another small to share the other 4 spots. What a unit that could be.
Conversely how good would it be if we can add to Foley, Deledio, Cotchin with another midfield gun, a top key forward prospect and/or a strong future ruckman. All of which we need more than another key back.

drafting only ruck/KP/midfield - no skinny flankers.

Finally, agree wholeheartedly on that BCL ;D

You forgot to mention Kelly. That's 7 quality midfielders.

We've got Foley/Cotchin/Deledio/Tuck as our best 4 midfielders. Edwards/White/Tambling also rotating through. Potentially as good as the Geelong boys? Maybe. In 2-4 years time they could be. Tuck will be close to the end by then but the other will be in their prime so hopefully we can draft a couple of quality midfielders in between.

Are McGuane/Thursfield/Moore/Rance going to be the equal of Harely/Scarlett/Egan/Milburn. No. Not a chance. Simply not physically equipped for it. So, IMO we need to upgrade with at least one key defender.

Are you happy to keep 2 or 3 of Newman/King/McMahon/Bowden in our backline? I'm not. But it is what will have to do if Moore/McGuane/Thursfield share the 2 key post roles.

Personally I would prefer McMahon/Bowden/King out of the side and Newman on a wing.

IMO we need to have 2 picks dedicated to drafting for key defenders.

2 Picks for key forwards, 2 picks for ruckman, 2-4 picks for midfielders.

Patfull/Gibson/Pratt not very good as key def IMO. Add Harry o'brien to that bunch. Often exposed for their lack of size. All, much like Andrew Kellaway, best suited to a 3rd tall. Good players in all though.

Morris not really a Key def - very good footballer.

Fisher - yes, a good Key def but is taller and heavier than all ours. And funnily enough, always will be.

BTW Barry was chosen on the bench and in a BP in his AA years - never at FB.

Why can't we draft the KF, R, Midfielder & KD? That is all we should be drafting. Plenty of dead wood on our list to get rid of.

Now you're just being silly, skipper. We'll manage to upgrade each of these picks into a top 30 pick, no problem.

That's how it works when you decide to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Now you are being silly. No other team will be picking that late so we will in fact have picks 112, 113, 114 and 115. Should be some late gems in there.

You're right.

How could anyone resist Richo+Bowden+pick 112 for pick 6?

Richo and Bowden aren't worth much but pick 112 could turn out to be the next Chris Grant.

Well given Thursty and Moore are off the rookie list there could well be. ;)

Well, whoever we get at 112 through 115 you can bet that the club were surprised they were still there and expected them to be taken much earlier in the draft.

A lot of supporters are obviously satisfied with our list. A couple of minor changes should do it hey?

Names like Hyde, Tivendale, King, Pattison, Jackson, JON, McMahon, Pettifer, Howat, Jackson, Casserly & Hughes, will surely lead us to the promised land....

Few of those are far too early to make a call on
JON, Casserly & Hughes specifically, they're all 20-21 years old
Casserly looked good in the NAB Cup, just needs to get on the park

I reckon if we play our trading period right we could pick up all the other teams picks from 100 to 130. It would be a smorgasboard of fringe VFL-capable players to choose from.

Probably been said already but the following must go at the end of the year:

Tivendale
Pettifer
Polak
Bowden
McMahon - what a waste of time
Hyde
Oakley nichols
Meyer
polo

sheesh thats nine and doesnt include rookies.watch out goose the faint hearted ones will be after ya.the usual *smile* will be spouted out things like you cany drop nine you will have to use picks 100 onwards. no imagination the faint hearted they love their duds they would rather hang onto them knowing their no good than put a kid on the rookie list. the old shallow draft excuse is bound to come out as well. ya know every draft is a shallow draft for the faint hearted.

very easy to turn over nine and not go past a pick in the 50s yep faint hearted ferals no imagination.

Totally agree, why do so many here want to hang onto duds?

Because the players we replace them with will be on your dud list in another 2 years because he's a 7th rounder who hasn't shown enough yet.
