Last year the combo of an in form Hughes, Riewoldt, Morton, in form Brown and Richo pushing up from the wing on occasions was working really well and we had hope for 2009. This season it has all came crashing down. Even earlier in the season before Richo got injured it was breaking down. Then suddenly when he was pushed up to CHF we looked a million times better structurally. Obviously Richo isn't the future (probably should retire this year as we have no hope for finals next year anyways) and we need to look beyond him.
Forward structure we have been using lately:
Cotchin Riewoldt Hislop
Vickery Morton Nahas
Vickery is way too raw to be having any impact and is being used in the ruck as well. We need a permanent forward. Post is not the answer either, he is a natural backman. So we are playing one genuine KPF (who funnily enough needs to bulk up a lot more to play KP) as our only tall. It's a disgrace IMO. So many occasions we bomb long to him and he's 1 on 5 and 1 on 4 and has no chance. He has done great for the lack of structure we have, besides his kicking. On occasions I've even seen us go long to Nahas because we have no other tall options. We need someone, even if they can't take the grab and dominate like a Tippet just to make a contest or bring it down the crumbers to give us some damn structure. No forward structure = no hope. We are playing 5 KPD's which is way too many as well, probably only need 3, max 4. Our game plan is poor, we over possess and handball way too much but IMO a lot of it stems from having no tall targets to have faith to kick long to or creating options up forward to bomb to over the top of a zone.
Let's look at our options
Hughes - Great 08, looked really promising and was kicking goals. 09 has fallen in a heap for him, played mainly in Coburg reserves. Was played in the Coburg seniors today and apparently was dissapointing.
Pattison - Well, he was drafted as a KPF. Was never a ruckman and never will be. Don't think he will ever make it but he is welcome to prove me wrong. Played mainly up forward today in Coburg, kicked 2... dunno how he looked up there.
Schulz - Enough said, had enough chances. Trade for whatever we can. I watch him very closely when I see him play either for Richmond or Coburg. Very lazy footballer.
Gourdis - Drafted, delisted, drafted. Dunno what we're doing with him. Athetlic and has potential but question marks over him. Played Coburg reserves today? Dunno how he went.
Pretty bleak if you ask me. Probably none of them are our answer for the long-term future but at least one needs to play and quick smart to at least get our structure right to allow us to play a better game plan before anything else. Fix this now Rawlings.
