Some positives for potential coaches about taking the coaching position at RFC

One thing that is a positive is that the current department did begin a list rebuild. Whilst it hasn't yielded the results we hope and we need to carve away some duds, there is the basis of building a decent list long term.

Agree - despite the hysteria I think this rebuild is in process and I remain optimistic (perhaps naively) that long term it will result in a strong team.

Agree - we don't want a Sheedy - his pre round 1 comments now seen quite embarrasing and very ill timed and have just added to the pressure on the team. Easy in hindsight, but you need to walk (ie make the finals) before you start that talk. Shows me he is out of touch.

Problem at the moment is that confidence is so low that all players are playing 10% below their best - how you turn that around is the million dollar question and obviously most on pre don't think it can't happen in 09, hence the talk of cleanout. If we can get everyone to play close to their potential - then I think the basis of a good to very good side is there (still not elite hence not top 4).

The process is underway - we do not need to start from scratch again but we were always a work in progess. To think that by turning up in 09, we would automatically make the finals was always naive - it was always going to be touch and go.

The point is about perception, not reality! Soem cocky young thing might think at least some of those blokes have been misshandled, and think he can do much better with them. Make a name for himself.
Isn't that what terry tried to do? What was it that octa Wilson said....your can't turn sh!t into strawberry jam.

Let's get someone who can do the job quietly, effectively, without a need to prove themselves to anyone.
I agree in theory....but who on earth could we get as caretaker who wouldn't be trying to prove themselves capable of getting the gig long-term? Does such a man exist?

Whoever gets the caretaker role should be told they can apply for the senior role when it comes up just like everyone else and all applications will be taken in consideration.

Fair point. I was thinking in terms of attracting potential coaches to apply, but you're right we don't want someone who's too starry eyed about the list.

Agree, we're not entirely a write-off in terms of developing talent. Cotchin, Deledio, Riewoldt, Polo, McGuane, Rance, Putt, Morton, Hislop, Vickery, Tambling, Thomson, Gourdis, Post, Thursfield, Connors, Foley, Moore, Collins, Browne are all young and can form the nucleus of a side to build around. Some won't make it, obviously, but not a bad starting point for a rebuild just the same.

That's not too bad a core group on paper. The problem is that we've looked good on paper all year.

Cant believe people are singing Rodan's praises based on one game. Sure he had a great game against Hawthorn - he can turn it on - but he's about as inconsistent as they come. We have many who perform like him and most get a good bagging on a daily basis. As someone mentioned he was dropped for poor performance after only 2 games. Last year had 10 (or almost half of his games) with 14 possessions or less. Tambling was more consistent than that last year and look at the bagging he gets (and is 3 years younger).

Think we have a case of 'selective praise because he no longer wears a Richmond jumper' disease here.

So far this season Rodan has played in 3 games his total stats are 19 kicks, 42 handballs, 9 marks & 13 tackles.
Hes having an average of 23 posessions a game playing in a side thats in the top 4.
Nothing wrong with those figures.

Yet he was dropped after 2nd round, go figure.

Marks mean jack for a sall player. None of those were contested. Has also played very outside. Only 5 contested possessions out of those 3 games. Even his game against Hawthorn, 27 of his 29 posessions were uncontested and only had 9 kicks . His first two games were very ordinary by all reports. Saying that he has been relatively good at the 1%ers and tackles.

By the way he's averaging 20 possessions a game on the back of his Hawthorn game, averaging 6 kicks and 14 handballs.
