I love Richo - absolutely adore the big lug - but he's probably not necessarily somebody you'd dub Mr Leadership.

But he's the closest we have...

As much as the mere suggestion of recruiting recycled players tends to have many PREnders frothing at the gob, could we not perhaps look at going all out this year to grab a couple of real leaders in trade week or the PSD?

I equate some of our list to CDs - my collection was worth a hell of a lot more five years ago than it is now... so why not trade them and maybe even fiddle with the odd draft pick to get some genuine, mid-20s leaders into Tigerland?

Assuming we could convince them, of course...

We can't let our raft of mostly promising young'uns fall foul of the seeming Punt Road malaise that has infected many before them - apparent abject apathy. Perhaps some genuine look-up-to-able leadership is the solution?

Ms Tantie.

No doubt we could draft some or one good leader to our club, I mean, our Captain and Vice Captain are from other clubs. We eventually have to "grow" our own, but I like your idea Ms T.

Thanks feisty, I should have elaborated more there - I'm confident we have some future leaders in our midst already - Nathan Foley in particular - but our crop is too young to have somebody who can credibly get away with the whole leadership thing. Band Aids have their uses - so why not go for one or more leadership types around the 25-26-27 mark for now, have them hopefully help turn the loser culture tide of the club rather than succumb to it, and mentor/groom the Foleys, Reiwoldts and maybe Deledios and such we have now.

We're possibly going to lose them otherwise...

I mentioned the same thing to a guy at work (who's a Geelong fan, still mocks me about Kingsley). I think it's a great idea. Go out and get someone who's extroverted, and a real leader. Someone who's going to come in and challenge the guys, and demand they get better.

What, you mean someone like, I dunno, Nathan Brown?

Didn't work.

No. I mean someone who's real outspoken and intimidating.

We'd never land them, but a Jonathon Brown or Barry Hall, a Mark Ricciuto or a Michael Voss type. Someone who's not only classy, but someone you'd be scared to let down.

Nathan isn't bad, but he's a bit of a pretty boy, and I wouldn't be too worried about giving him some lip back. I don't think he'd like to get in a fight.

Don't be too sure. Nathan would be too smart to respond to your lip ;). A fighter isn't necessarily a leader..................

The point remains, he's not in the same class as the others as a leader, and that's taking into account the couple of years his missed.

It is not going to happen. Clubs don't give away 'leaders' and you can;t simply change clubs and become a great leader at the nw club.

Thanks JB you beat me to it. True leaders are not traded they are treasured. We have to find a leader amongst our own. Lets hope Lids or Foley, Jack or the like start to step up. Not just yet but in the future. From what I have seen Polak has some merit, at least he is prepared to stand up for his team mates which is more than some others have done this year......

Not always:

Barry Hall
Peter Bell
Stu Maxwell
AND Kane Johnson

There is probably some others?

I agree largely though with the principle of encouraging your won Captain - however in my experience at about 6 different footy clubs - Good Captains rise to the top through a natural process of team spirit, deeds and respect. If you could put your prejudice away to one side for some months and be around the club throughout a season, anyone here would know who the Captain ought to be - well nearly anyone ;D

Cogs or Foley are the only choices, in that order, with a distinct preference for Cogs if he can make it back.
