Sox up. Sox down. Thoughts ?

Ahh that explains it......I think? :-\

Maybe we need a questions thread.... you know "Why do the stars twinkle?" etc.

Refraction of light Andy. Similar reason why the horizon sometimes appears to 'shimmer' on a hot day.

On the socks issue, personally no amount of taping by me could ever get the damn things to stay up. As Red as so eloquently explained, the only way you get could get them to stay up was with the electrical tape done on the 'too tight' type fashion. Of course this is far from conducive to play one's best footy. So generally the well intentioned 'sox up' wearer may be inadvertantly being labelled a 'sox down' enthusiast when really, he is just a victim of circumstance and is yet to, as had Redford and I until recently, have the good fortune to have heard of the 'Ready sock tapiing technique'. As an aside Ready perhaps you should look at trademarking that.
Anyway all this got me thinking Red. I know a bloke who knows a bloke, who just may have some contacts at Holeproof.
Perhaps if I approach them about making 'Computer socks' (trademarked already I believe Ready) in club colours, I can share in some of the small GDP of a third world country like financial benefits that would undoubtedly flow as a result of such an initiative. :D

Home made elastic garters, the only way I could keep the old footy socks "up". I always liked to have my socks up because the water & mud etc. seemed to weigh more if the socks were down around my ankles & I was slow enough anyway. Didnt need any other things to slow me down. ;D ;D

I should trademark it. Although I'm pretty sure Scott Wynd had a similar system except he used a white bandage-type thing.

Every season some new teammate will observe me applying the tape around my ankles on the outside of the socks, and I will explain the purpose of what I'm doing, and the bloke will look at me like I'm an absolute nutter.

I'm sure we've dealt with this spitting issue before.

As males they are repressed and unable to deal adequately with their emotions, and as such produce large quantities of bile which must be evacuated from the throat before they choke and die bitter, twisted and alone.

Erm, EWW! :vomit

Diggler is obviously repressed and can't make it to Flinders St.

I remember Geelong (i'm pretty sure) had a policy in the early/ mid ninties that players had to wear there socks up to prevent being sent off for small cuts when the blood rule first came on the scene. I vaguely remember their coach (can't remember who) also saying that a small cut could lead to an infection & a player then missing games. So basically he though the socks up could prevent cuts & infections. He was right into it, quite funny really.

I find the elastic on socks now is better than it used to be, and I don't have any problems keeping my socks up.

I used to use elastic around the top of my calves to keep my socks up when playing hockey. That was when shin guards were a bit smaller than they are nowadays.  They really do cover the whole shin now, so I just tuck my socks around the top of them.

Socks Down!! Only old men wear short shorts with long socks pulled up ;)

Geez, some of those guys in the 80’s sure had their shorts up. Right up !!

(Steve McPherson was lucky he didn’t choke on his.)

when i played footy as a kid it was always socks down and jumper haning out without exception. it was a fashion thing then like it still is today. you don't see any fashion trendsetters in AFL footy wearing their socks up. although from what i understand players are forced to tuck in their footy jumpers to avoid opposition players dislocating fingers when they tackle

And while I'm at it, what's with all this spitting by players nowadays? Haven't any of these boys ever been to Flinders Street Station and seen the 'DO NOT SPIT' signs?!!! Honestly, in my day - blahblahblahrhubarbrhubarbrhubarb...

When I was a kid i thought it said on the wall tiles on the up ramp from the platform "no expectorating".

On the socks issue I always liked them up. Being a midget and playing rover I often got stood on, scraped or kicked in the shins and the extra padding and friction reduction helped.
