Buckley is a great long kick but his options are often bemusing expecially <40m.

In the last 5 minutes of the 2002 GF when it was all on the line Voss showed Buckley what champions do.

Here here.  :clap

Buckley is a very good footballer but I wonder if he'd be considered as an absolute elite if he played anywhere but Collingwood.

His short kicking is suspect as you say but gets glossed over because his long kicking is excellent and more spectacular. He became too much of a reciever too long ago for mine. Voss is far and away a more valuable player.

Some sanity and real football nouse. Well done TGN and Billy boy. Buckley has become a much better player under Malthouse but no where near a champion. He is a beautifully balanced kick but his decision making especially early in his career was woeful. Also his long kicking is good but not accurate - only a 50/50 proposition shooting for goal as opposed to our "wayward" Richo at 61%.

I dont think he is soft and is a good body on body player - can do a good job on a bigger player (eg Carey) Surprises you in a way a bit like Bowden - sometimes these outside solid bodied midfield players demonstrate how good they are by matching up on a Carey or Brown or Treadrea.

He is an ordinary inside player again like Bowden as doesn't have that instinct or vision to gather and dispose under pressure - Voss and Hird are excpetional in this regard and a class above.

Find some pre Malthouse videos and watch how many targets Buckley misses and how many gettable goals he missses. TV doesn't show you the wronmg options taken but I have often sat with my Collingwood supporter mate and pointed out every one of Buckley's faux pas' in a game so much so that he ALMOST agrees with me. Was great when Duncan would towel him up time after time.

Great runner and endurance, great endeavour, great ball winner and penetrating kick, - very good player but no CHAMP!!

Ablett could do anything the other 'best ever' contenders could do.

But they couldn't do the things Gazza was capable of.
I rate Daicos d. jarmen and Richardson too.

The Voss's and carey's, even Hird...could all dominate seasons without finding any real footy magic.
Although Hird's goal against WCE (hug the fan after goal) was pretty special. Wells has it. Rodan showed a glimpse with the goal over the head.

any i've forgotten?

6 best and fairests,3 other times top 3,7 times AA,3 times vc for AA,Internatinal rules series captian,Brownlow,Norm Smith,Jesaulenko,Rising star Medals.Just for intrest sake the guys who you all beleave are Champions, AA times, Ablett 8,Carey 7,Hird 5,Voss 5, voss winning his first the same year Buckley did.Now I have too agree the 4 mentioned have to deserve Champion status but how the F*** can you not say the same for Buckley,if he played for Richmond you would be saying greatest bloody player ever.I think you will also find Dunc took the points probally 3 times over Bucks and that would be from his own mouth.

Simple CC. Here are 10 reasons Buckley doesn't compare with the fab 4.

First most neutral observers would pay money to see a Hird, Carey, Ablett or Voss play.  Very few non aligned would pay to see Buckley play.

Two, Hird, Carey, Ablett and Voss can do the freakish things that take your breath away.  Buckley doesn't - he is an accumulator.

Three Carey, Hird and Voss have great vision and make their temmates better players.  Ablett was not as team orientated but was a freak.  Buckley's vision and choice making are average.

Four  - Carey, Hird, Voss and Ablett could consistently turn the tide of matches and win them off their own boot.  Buckley does not.  Voss Carey and Hird ;led their teams to multiple premierships.  Ablett was just stiff - probably played the best grand final of all time but still couldn't get them over the line! Also suspended in a subsequent final series when he was flying in the H & A.

Five  - ALL australians and Norm Smiths are awarded by people such as Robert Walls, Gerard Healy and Sun journalists.  The Brownlow is voted on by umpires!  Calthorpe has even won a EJ whitten medal for GAWDS sake.  You quote his Norm Smith Medal when Voss was clearly BOG that day.  The other influential player on the ground that day was Clark Keating.  Buckley lucky to be considered top 3.

Six - Copeland trophies won when Collingwood rock bottom dont mean much - only very ordinary Collingwood players to beat.  Only when Licuria and others started winning Copelands did Collingwood become more successful.

Seven - Voss, Hird, Carey and Ablett are multiple goal scorers including Voss and Hird who are ostensibly midfilders.  Buckley is not.

Eight Voss Hird Carey and Ablett are all better inside players and are all tougher than Buckley.

Nine - Voss Hird Carey and Ablett are better kicks at goal than Buckley and better generally in their use of the ball than Buckley.

And finally ten when Voss, Carey, Ablett and Hird missed game through injury their teams suffered greatly. When Buckley misses games the team performance does not change significantly.

Case closed (CC) Tiger.

PS Duncan is very modest :)

Instead of waisting valuable PRE space Im going to just say I agree with on your Fab 4 L22 but Not once have I spoke too a player or coach or anybody who has a real role at an AFL club that has not said Buckley is anything but a Champion but im sure players you rate I dont and so on so hope for your sake Bucks has a ordinary year :hihiand your team wins the flag ;D

The word champion is thrown around all too freely, especially during a players career. The biggest test is how a player is rated when all the emotion dies down, his cheer squad is no longer on TV and radio (and Buckley has a pretty effective cheer squad) and his career is properly assessed.

He is a very good player and of course he would have been welcomed with open arms to Richmond but he is not a true champion of the game. (And using club B&Fs to support his case is not that useful when the club has performed as poorly as Collingwood over his career.)

I'll be very surprised if in the course of time he is considered truly elite when compared to Voss, Hird or Carey.
