In the last 5 minutes of the 2002 GF when it was all on the line Voss showed Buckley what champions do.
Here here. :clap
Buckley is a very good footballer but I wonder if he'd be considered as an absolute elite if he played anywhere but Collingwood.
His short kicking is suspect as you say but gets glossed over because his long kicking is excellent and more spectacular. He became too much of a reciever too long ago for mine. Voss is far and away a more valuable player.
Some sanity and real football nouse. Well done TGN and Billy boy. Buckley has become a much better player under Malthouse but no where near a champion. He is a beautifully balanced kick but his decision making especially early in his career was woeful. Also his long kicking is good but not accurate - only a 50/50 proposition shooting for goal as opposed to our "wayward" Richo at 61%.
I dont think he is soft and is a good body on body player - can do a good job on a bigger player (eg Carey) Surprises you in a way a bit like Bowden - sometimes these outside solid bodied midfield players demonstrate how good they are by matching up on a Carey or Brown or Treadrea.
He is an ordinary inside player again like Bowden as doesn't have that instinct or vision to gather and dispose under pressure - Voss and Hird are excpetional in this regard and a class above.
Find some pre Malthouse videos and watch how many targets Buckley misses and how many gettable goals he missses. TV doesn't show you the wronmg options taken but I have often sat with my Collingwood supporter mate and pointed out every one of Buckley's faux pas' in a game so much so that he ALMOST agrees with me. Was great when Duncan would towel him up time after time.
Great runner and endurance, great endeavour, great ball winner and penetrating kick, - very good player but no CHAMP!!
