St Kilda game...form, tips and memories

Didn't we also draw with them twice around 78-80? Including in an early round in 1980 where we went on to win the flag and I think they went nowhere???
We drew with them in 1980 leading into our 11 game winning streak. I think the draw was Jezza's first game as coach replacing Ian Stewart.

Remember the trip up to Sydney in 1982 where we gave them a 5 goal head start in the 1st Q and still won by 20 goals. I remember Jessy having shots at goal from the centre square of the SCG.

It was South Melbourne we played in 1982 and conceded them about 8 goals to zip in the first term before coming back to win. I think we kicked 9 or 10 goals in the 2nd term to get back into the game.

As other posters have noted, the StKilda win was in 1980 at the SCG the week after we lost to bottom side Fitzroy!

I also remember Geoff Raines putting Bruce Duperouzel's lights out with a text book coat hanger in the centre wicket area that game!

i remember us kicking over 200 points to beat them at the MCG in either 1984 or 85.

My memory serves it was 1985 with Paul Sproule as coach.

If I recall correctly, beanstalk Tim Barling was playing his debut season with the Tiges.
I remember him wrecking his knee shortly after and finally ending up at Sydney.

1985 was an interesting year.
Sproule wanted to fundamentally change the way that the Tigers played footy.
It said something about the club, it's supporters & culture, that Sproule was sacked at the end of the season.
Must admit that, at the time, I was one of those asking for Sproule's head.

In hindsight, I'm 50/50 about it.
Sproule should have been given a second preseason & second year to be given every chance to prove his new methods.
I still look back on what he was trying to do and admit that I'm still not sold on it.

PS, for those that weren't around then, it appeared to be a high possession short game.
Not a natural game, as we know, for the Tiges.

Sproule's sacking led to Barry Richardson walking away from the Presidency only 12 months in. Who knows what might have happened if he had stuck around?
