st kilda v richmond game thread

I reckon Lids had a better game last night than the 2 players most lauded on this forum.

Rosy, i havent bothered to even go through any threads from last night. This was the first one i even bothered to look at. Lids is great Trade material and it should be looked at closely come years end.

1899 was the last time we did not score in the second and third quarter---still a VFA club!! OUCH!!

No doubt the chimp's game was abyssmal. Couldn't do anything right last night. Let's hope he's chimping at the bit for next week to redeem himself.

I know they are just stats--But--I was there last night and at quarter time the scoreboard said we had 11 forward 50 entries---at half time we had 13--and one of those was a Stkilda player crossing the line as he swept the ball across to the other flank---so that is ONE genuine entry in a quarter of football---not sure if that has happened in a game of AFL footy--abysmal! ( I stand to be corrected on this!!)

We can't withstand pressure from the top teams because most of our players, nearly all of them, aren't built for the game.

When we got Wallet he emphasised that success is based on the age of your playing group. No mention of size because Wallet does not understand that it's all about size.

StKilda and Geelong are undefeated this year because they have a core of 90kg skilful smalls. Ours barely make 80. So when the bad boys turn up the heat we get swept aside. As does the theory that the game is put on for scrawny runners.

(And this is not about 90kgs vs 80kgs. It's the two on ones - 180 on 75 that really bite. And doesn't that second nasty man always come in to drive his mass into the ribs of the little fellow?)

That's not to say that some of our skinnies like Muscles, Moore, Riewoldt and Bling don't have a future. And there's always room for a line breaking rover like Foley.

But we need to surround them with big strong skilful footballers. This is not a new theory. It abides from the seventies. (Collingwood was winning the minor premiership with pacy petals for some of this time - the new game. LOL) Muscle wins football games. Pace? It lasts a quarter of the bad men driving its head into the lawn. Hey, that's how long we lasted against the Saints.

Remember that prelim against the Crows, Wallet? Muscle beats pace. If it doesn't the game is no longer football.

We have to urgently address Wallace's legacy. We have to recruit only players who are built for the game. BTW how's Jackson going this year? Shame we haven't got another dozen of them. That's what a stock small looks like.

Great Post. Welcome back Jack. Funny how tried and true theories like "big men don't get any smaller" are treated like Fairy Tales at Tigerland.

Spot on, look at Jack Riewoldt, he still looks like a 17 year old kid, tall and skinny, no muscle whatsoever. He should be in the gym come end of the season and told to put on at least 7Kg. There are plenty of other young players in the same position, they must put on some bulk and work on their endurance fitness as well, or its going to be more of the same. Roll on the new Senior Coach and hopefully a thorough clean out of the football department.
