We can't withstand pressure from the top teams because most of our players, nearly all of them, aren't built for the game.
When we got Wallet he emphasised that success is based on the age of your playing group. No mention of size because Wallet does not understand that it's all about size.
StKilda and Geelong are undefeated this year because they have a core of 90kg skilful smalls. Ours barely make 80. So when the bad boys turn up the heat we get swept aside. As does the theory that the game is put on for scrawny runners.
(And this is not about 90kgs vs 80kgs. It's the two on ones - 180 on 75 that really bite. And doesn't that second nasty man always come in to drive his mass into the ribs of the little fellow?)
That's not to say that some of our skinnies like Muscles, Moore, Riewoldt and Bling don't have a future. And there's always room for a line breaking rover like Foley.
But we need to surround them with big strong skilful footballers. This is not a new theory. It abides from the seventies. (Collingwood was winning the minor premiership with pacy petals for some of this time - the new game. LOL) Muscle wins football games. Pace? It lasts a quarter of the bad men driving its head into the lawn. Hey, that's how long we lasted against the Saints.
Remember that prelim against the Crows, Wallet? Muscle beats pace. If it doesn't the game is no longer football.
We have to urgently address Wallace's legacy. We have to recruit only players who are built for the game. BTW how's Jackson going this year? Shame we haven't got another dozen of them. That's what a stock small looks like.
