Stafford - we need a young version quick smart!

Once again we saw last night how valuable Stafford is to the Tigers. Forget him for a moment, let's talk about what he does:

- add some much needed toughness: there was a centre ball up in the 3rd Q where the ball sort of went nowhere but out of the corner of the screen you saw him smash a few Lions under the disguise of the pack milling over the ball, you could see some of the forward entries the Lions were clearly wondering "where the hell is Stafford, i'm a good chance to get a knee in the back from this bloke". Which is exactly how J. Brown plays (except he's 8 years younger and a better player). The effect is noticeable.

- straighten up the delivery: probably because he can't move so freely he really anchors himself to the square and lets Richo and others run all over the joint, when Richo is the sole (or major) tall in the forward line he ends up in pockets/flanks whereas Stafford invariably has his shots from 20m-30m in front, hence he always kicks his 2's and 3's from limited shots

- he's smart: can't teach this, but he just knows how to play, in the 3rd Q he got the ball just inside the centre square and in a split sec summed up that if he drew Foley's man he would free Foley up. This resulted in Foley getting a goal assist. This is probably Staffords major strength, for all his inj probalems, he's so freakin clever he knows how to manage his way thru the game and have an impact. Another example was in the last q when Charman was running rampant and smashing the ball forward - he went into the ruck, sidestepped Charman who was looking for contact and just grabbed the ball and kicked it, again can't teach how smart that is, doing the exact thing the opposition isn't expecting

- Blokes like playing with him: likely because he's a little (or a lot) dirty and smart he falls into the category of "love playing with him, hate to play against him"

All in all, he's so valuable that i reckon our winning % when he's in would be pretty impressive as against when he's out (or when he's in but inj).

The real reason for this topic is that there is no replacement for him on the board for the next 1-3 years. I assume this is why he's survived the cut the last 2 years. Miller and Wallace would know that if/when he's fit (sadly about 10 games a year) we win a high proportion of these games and our structure is way better.

I know Phantom and others have been tolling this bells for years, but nights like last night show the looming big man hole for the Tigers. Unless Hughes and others are ready next year to be game winners (which is unfair on them and unrealistic) we're staring down the barrel until 2008/2009.

Good post Dallas.

Stan is also a deadeye *smile* when shooting for goal. He always goes hard and gives the forward line a meaner and keener edge, freeing richo and others up to run wild.

I would argue he has been good value since coming from Sydney. He can't be on a huge wage and performs well when on the park - I know his frequent injuries and suspensions have diminished his value. Injuries aren't his fault and suspensions are a consequence of his hard attack on the ball and the man - I thought the tribunal has not done him any favours either with some dodgy and long suspensions.

If he can keep this form up for the year and avoid injury or suspension he could be worth another one year contract.

his name is troy roy the boy simmonds...... The talls were missed havin stafford and hall together with simmo and richo makes the team a much more open, versatile, tuff. tiger tuff :spin

Yep, nice post Dallas. Agree with nearly everything you say. It's matches like those last night when you see the value in Stafford.
Only problem is that you need less than the fingers of one hand to count these games by Stafford in a single season.

If we're happy winning a handful of games in a season then retain Stafford. If we want to win more, then I might suggest that we develop a handful of junior Staffords, of which 2 or 3 can give us 10 or more years service.

Watched 3 junior games yesterday. Ironically the team with the fastest & best talls won every of the 3 games.

Couldn't agree more Phantom, that was the object of my post. It's not actually Stafford that's important, it's someone who plays like Stafford, but is 22 y/o and plays every week!

It's not Simmonds, he looks like a horse who thrives on hard work - just needs to ruck all day with the occassional break in the pocket.

My main worry is the 'gap' between Stafford falling off the perch at the end of this year and someone playing the same role which might be 3 or more years away.

Last night was another (!) stark reminder that GOOD TALL PLAYERS WIN YOU GAMES!

Love Tambling to death and hope he plays 150 for us, but if he was a 6'4+ gun forward we'd look a far sight healthier club right now.

Yep, and it takes 6 years to develop a Stafford. And every year you postpone it, means that the journey takes 6 years longer.

Yep, Stafford is/has been a very good player.  Agree with everything that has been said, but would add that he is very skillful.  And that's not just for a big bloke; he really uses the ball well by any standard.

The real problem is that players like this are as rare as hens teeth.  I'd love to have a 20 year old kid on the list with the mix of talents Stafford has - size, smarts, aggression, and skills.

We'll have to do everything we can.  That means a) develop Angus and Patto in the best possible way and b) trade intelligently (well that's how we got Stafford after all) and c) draft wisely.

There was a  Stafford/Brogan type available early in last seasons  PSD/Rookie draft-McEntee.Unfortunately we took White instead.

Not happy with White Evo?

the difference is when you kick it long & direct you bring stafford into the game
when you muck around or expect him on long leads - forget it

having stafford gives us the option to go long - without him we dont

the added grunt and aggression in the fwd half brings our smaller players into the game and gives them confidence that someone is there to help if the rough stuff starts

I think we could've got McEntee and White(or failing that Hocking or Ed Lower). They're all much of muchness.

Yep. There'll be better ruckman available as late draft picks this year.

Hansen & Thorp, if we ever want to be fair dinkum in the future, but the only way we could get either of these two is finishing bottom 4.  If we do like last year & get our 9 or 10 wins we'll be going nowhere in a hurry.

GO TIGES!!!

That is a good thing to hear.

Also troubles me because we know at the top end we need some key backs and late we need some ruck man.  It troubles me because  do we have the courage of our conviction to ignore the speedy six foot flanker/wingman and take the mobile KPP first up and try to get some runners with the third and fourth round picks and then snag a late ruckman.

More then likely we will take the runners first then go for the KPP with the second and third.  I hope I am wrong.

What I would like to know from Phantom is based on this years draft what positions are deepest so we can get a quality player with our mid picks?  From what I have read there is a lot of KKP early but I haven't heard the depths of the mids.  What drafting patterns should we take based on the depth of the 2006 crop?

You think we should try and lose? Is that the only way we can be fair dinkum in the future?

Cheers

I'd say that we really won't know until about July/August. The carnival will be a good indicator.
