Word around that an announcement will be made in the next coupla weeks regarding this position as strength and conditioning coach..

I've often wondered if anyone here has ever sighted a specified program for a past player or current. what sort of info is there on it?

weights/rep amount? 100kg bench press 10 reps to be followed by 30 squats with 80kg etc etc...
weekly timetable? tues - 7am swimming at middle park beach 8am weights at punt road etc etc...
diet intake???

is this the strength and conditioning coaches job to get everyone in tip top condition?

i wonder what Tamblings strength and conditioning program would be for the current preseason? what the hell really is strength and conditiioning?

This would be to get the players in the best possible condition to perform at their best I guess if the player was an inside mid would need bulk to get in & under packs & bust them open i.e Hodge Foley Judd etc outside player more endurance etc

Strength and conditioning is simply getting an athlete into top physcial condition to compete in the desired competition.

does it include nutrition? alternative training? sorry i know im being anal but i presume we've been doing all this stuff already but now we'll actually have someone permanantly on the case. WHat was Matt Hornbys (is that his name???) the fitness guys job then?

strength and conditioning coaches have a basic understanding of nutrition and sports nutrition... but nothing compared to a dietitian! really should have both on board at AFL level. Could get away with a part time dietitian! Alternative training would be part of the strength and conditioning coaches role.

A lot of players have individual programs based on their needs and strengths and weaknesses. They all vary a lot from player to player.
Think some of them inadvertently might have got or swapped programs Gussy ;D

Koefed is Hornsby's 2IC, they oversea everything I thought?

John Vickery is weights/boxing I think.

Make sure we dont get the bloke Geelong sacked

Sack our bloke and get the fellow that Geelong has now - he was unsung hero behind their premiership win.

Surely we have at least one strength and conditioning coach?

Haven't you noticed how easily we got brushed aside and monstered around the ball this year? Doesn't that answer your question?

Think a couple of years ago, Hornsby was working for us thru a private company as a consultant (ie part time). Think he went OS two years ago and has returned. Maybe Koeford was his replacement at the time. Don't think we have had a S&C coach on staff at all.

Others may know more of the detail.

I hope we do better in this area cause I have been told that when OTTENS arrived at Geelong they were shocked at his lack of strength below his shoulders. In other words he got pushed off too easily in ruck contests and they immediately went about rectifying the problem. The cats were astounded and it says alot about our ability in strengthening our players over the years. Unfortunately we have had sand kicked in our faces for a long time and it needs to be addressed ASAP. Get someone expert in the field now!

With all the other areas that have been identified as needing addressing, you'd hope this is an integral part of the plan that incorporates other player development, stands out like the proverbials, some players look like they've put on a bit of muscle others still look like boys, even after a couple of years. Like to know if there is an individual weight plan for each player or whether they just go in and do a few reps?
