Stupid Comments from coaches-2006

The most entertaining comment from a coach, for me, goes to the late great David Hookes.

Whilst commentating on an Australian tour of India, Hookes said,

"Wouldn't it have been great if the U.S. had been a British colony, then we could have had cricket tours there."

(For those to whom that comment just went woosh, the U.S. WAS a British colony.)

More tea James?

Bomber Thompson from last year after King's leg collided with Whites face and the sympathy for White was something like
" What about King he could have broke his leg out there"

Mark Thompson Channel 7 news 2 weeks ago-"we will make the Grand Final this year"
Whats that about??
With stupid comments like that you deserve not to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thompson never said that, he said that his side was at a point in its development where it should be genuinely aiming to win a premiership and there's nothing stupid or wrong about that comment.

peter schwab 2004

i say no more!

The hapless Schwab also cops plenty for a statement that was made in a specific context. He was giving a talk to a business luncheon prior to the start of a season in which his side was rated by almost all as a strong finals fancy and by a good few as a real top four shot (the wonder of hindsight shouldn't detract from this setting). His comment worked from the perspective that in business you should run hard at it and not doubt yourself, hence why his coaching staff would be running from a slant that the side will win the premiership. It was essentially a comment on mindset that assumed loftier proportions among the footballing public.

Its also interesting that everyone readily recalls this comment from Schwab, but not the Frawley comment from 2002 when (with the side struggling late in the year) he went public with the view that he would win a premiership with these players.

At any rate, Mick Malthouse trying to blame his weekend loss on George Bush not signing the Kyoto agreement was a doozie. One would hope he had the tongue planted firmly in the cheek, but its hard to tell with Mick.

I thought Malthouse's 30 second basketball-style shot clock, when a player is lining up for goal, was one of the dumber suggestions I've heard in a while.

I saw the tv shot clock in our game but haven't seen it since. Did they give it the chop?

Was it Grant Thomas who said the better side today lost or somthing like that after we beat the Saints!!!!!

Thats gotta be up there or Malcolm Blight stating their should be 2 points for a behing kicked from outside fifty!!

Have people gone mad. And i wont even bother with Malthouse and his slow patient Oxen and Sheedys martians Oh Dear.

Interesting quote from Alastair Clarkson in todays Herald-Sun, speaking about the players, board and coaching staff he says....'I believe we are going to stick fat through all this!!

Remninds me of someone else whos coaching I'd prefer to forget! :hihi

Please - I'm now nearly off the meds.

Wow, forgot about this thread and I started it :doh . All those classic comments during the season missed :) . I thought I'd revive this thread instead of starting a new one because I may be wrong. Did Malthouse yesterday claim that he thought tarrant may have been blackmailed into doing an interview with sheehan? :o ???

Three to start with.

Dean Laidley declaring Geelong flag certainties after Round 2;
Sheedy's "basketball crap" comments after we knocked off Adelaide;
And Cornflakes on Robert Harvey: "Obviously we'll be trying to exit him out rather than exit him in."

Clarkson - "Spida is a required player at Hawthorn"
Bomber T - "I think he's learned his lesson" (Mooney after Suspension number 1)

"a broken finger might help you from crossing the line at the top"Reds golf coach Febuary 2006,no wonder his gettin out of the game :hihi

Not so much a stupid quote but rather, a response I would have liked to see. Malthouse responding to a question about didak's hit "would you like to rephrase that?" (and I think fair enough) I would have loved to hear the journo say 'yes, ok. About the didak elbow to the head" or "about the cowardly elbow from didak"
malthouse response would have been priceless ;D ;D
