Sugar still captain, Newman, Foley vice captains

I think the modern era of internet and TV have clouded peoples take on what it is to be captain. Carey had no public profile until after he left North, or if anything, the wrong one. My boy Knighter was one of the most respected captains in the league but his profile was entirely about how he played the game. Not about how he performed for the camera. Chris works hard and is rarely beaten. He can't win the game off his own boot from the backline, but has shown the capacity to kick the odd "Captain's goal".

Clearly we won't know if it was an inspired choice until we get into the season proper, but I'm looking forward to it.

yeah lots of good points tonight
But I can't agree with the Carey part. Carey had the swagger and the"my sh!t doesn't stink look" that Buddy Franklin's got now when he was about 20, you could see he was a leader.

Don't get me wrong I want Chris to go to the top but if you compare the names on the left and the immediate thought you have of them, compared to the others and you'll see what Im saying they demanded respect from all of the AFL community and that's why they got the gig..
These guys were all captains at about age 25 and had class written all over them and that to me is what a true captain is.

Voss Vandernberg
Hird Bell
Buckley Johnson B
Ricciuto Johnson K

Yeah I know ItchyEyes and don't worry I hope he gets the gig but I don't want to have to be defending him to all my mates like it seemed Hawthorn supporters were doing every second week with Vandenberg
Horrible thought........ the only way to shut that mob up is to start giving them a few good beltings. Wallace is 2:2 against Clarkson but both our wins were in 2005. We've got them twice at the MCG this year, so here's hoping for 2-0 or at least 1:1.

you comparing harley and newman now?

harley is a key defender who has presence out on the field and is very tight as a backman, low profile but still has that respect from the opposition that you want in your captain

newman might be highly respected at the club but he needs to put some more runs on the board imo, as much as i dont rate johnson as a captain he atleast has 2 flags and was a quality midfielder for a short while so he has the honours to some extent
Both are backman and Harley got the captaincy at age 28 whereas Newman is only 25. Otherwise I think we both agree that Newman needs a top season or two before he has serious credentials. Getting a co vicecaptaincy role is a good start.

Any team that's colours resemble Werribbee poo farm have got to be easybeats ;D

yeh alright premier..i do see some capitals now.....must be the instant headache i got when i got on here!! please accept my humblest apologies.....:)

This is NOT a comment on Newman or Foley.

How many players get into "leadership groups" or even become a DVC or even VC just to try and give them some kind of fillip or confidence boost or to change their mindset or to even see if they have what it takes?

Apology accepted.
Now go and lie down and have a Bex :)

the path to selection is not a pick out of the blue..the players have to want to be selected..the players team mates have to want them to be selected..and then the coaching panel have to want the player and his team mates to want the player!! got that...? :)

anyhow...it is not a simple "lets pick him and give him some confidence" process.....not at richmond anyway..as for other clubs..who knows..

If the captaincy process is as hard to understand as your first sentence it's lucky they reached a decision at all! ;D

Regardless of personalities it is VERY GOOD to see new faces being promoted into the leadership group. New blood breathes new life into the role.
