Swans vs North - low crowd

Sydney ratings are pretty poor too from what I understand. Mind you, if the ad revenues are so much higher then I guess it might add up. But you have to wonder, if there's a heap of money to spare, why does the AFL need to chase more ad revenue in Sydney? It would only make sense if the game had a chance to grow, and frankly I think they've got it wrong on that.

Its the networks that want it, and they are prepared to pay a premium for it.

The AFL is responding to this, and also the belief that the week off factor (no game in town) may be lessening interest in Brisbane and Sydney, which is why they are desperate for a game a week in these markets.

IMO Sydney is about TV audience and getting more games into the richest market in Australia for ad revenue. Anyone that rocks up is a bonus.

Said in the paper today that it only outrated a repeat of the Iron Chef on SBS in sydney.

The club will ultimately have to be a membership based club. The other clubs won't stand for it otherwise, look at the way they turned on Brisbane and Sydney for their concessions.

I think its more about expansion than anything
As Vlad stated that one poor crowd number and poor TV ratings for one game will not make any difference to the AFL push for the 2nd Sydney team. He said that it was more about the next "50 to 100 years" and therefore all about expansion ... but at what cost?

Yeah, sure Vlad. It's been only one game showing lack of interest in AFL by Sydney. You seem to think the AFL world is getting stupider by the week.

The AFL needs to re-think the second team in Sydney.

Regardless of the weather, poor promotion, small supporter base, 19,000 is poor for H&A season, let alone a final
they don't need to rethink the 2nd side they should simply forget about it.

I’m concerned about the viability of a second team in Sydney too, but where that game on Saturday night is specifically concerned, what would have been the crowd number if it was North playing the Swans in Melbourne at Waverley Park on a Saturday night.....freezing cold.........bucketing down with rain.........and the game being televised live into Melbourne as well ?
Dunno if there would have been that many more.

Cant help but think that a bit too much is being made of the crowd number from Saturday night.

For me Saturday night isn't the central point - it just confirms what I've thought all along. The West Sydney push is a dumb idea we're all going to suffer for.

I agree about the crowd number, a bit Chicken Little for my liking
I also think that West Sydney may not be too bad, there are a lot of Sydneysiders who would refuse to follow the swans given they are a very Eastern Suburbs type club

The Olympic Stadium is 1 hour drive from the city in peak hour traffic maybe but it is near the heart of where the Western Sydney team is to be based and where many people live. driving to it is not too bad at weekends and public transport is good - admitedly most swans supporters probably live closer to the city, but still a v poor crowd, but they get 70k to blockbuster games there(collingwood/previous finals) so the location should not be a factor. western sydney will in fact play their home games at the olympic stadium(in fact rumours were that the AFL actually tried to buy a large stake in the olympic stadium)(the AFL are only building a training base complex at Blacktown). now, i live at Penrith(not for long hopefully) and work near Blacktown and there is basically no AFL support here. on friday morning at Penrith i saw a young bloke wearing a hawks jumper, i nearly crashed the car from shock. my nearest Coles is selling those 'green' shopping bags in AFL teams colours - they will never sell except for people who think that the purple ones with an anchor look good but will have no idea that freo are an AFL team(yes there were plenty of the freo bags available) or even what AFL is. on the odd occassion that i've been to Penrith Panthers Club they actually have some of the tvs showing AFL games but maybe 1 or 2 people are actually watching.

But as others have said the AFL want more games for TV and the idea that there will be one game in sydney every weekend and this will help grow the code is probably a valid point. I suppose you'll also get 2 derby games a year which will help no end.

And apparently Auskick has had some affect with really young kids taking up and following the game in sydney so maybe in 10-15 years time there will be supporters who have followed AFL all their life and this will build a culture that the game in sydney can grasp. But in saying that the swans have now been here for 27 years(!), they have been through periods of both sexiness(edelsten) and a premiership, and still the average sydney person(especially out west) barely knows the swans exist. How many millions have the AFL poured in the swans over the years? Even 1 sydney team cannot stand on their own two feet so no-way can 2 teams. In saying that I'm sure the AFL have done their sums and they reckon that they can make the money back from increased tv rights and sponsorships looking forward 10-50 years. I actually think the gold coast and western sydney teams are a response to soccer and are being fast tracked because of the soccer threat.

As mentioned before, ratings are only a part of it.

AFL is at saturation in Victoria, so hard to get more coverage here.

Catchment is still small in Perth, and virtually non-existant in Adelaide and Tassie.

Queensland is a high growth market, but Sydney is by far the biggest.

Sydney allows advertisers to sign onto a national campaign, not just one restricted to some states (as the NRL suffer - reducing the value of their broadcast deal). Even a small audience in Sydney allows this, and at the end of the day this is what this is all about, maximizing advertising revenues.

Smallest finals crowd since 1924. Must have been damn cold.

The weather can only be part of the story. Poor ticket sales were already being touted earlier in the week.

some good arguments but i'm far from sold.
