Swine Flu Outbreak Reaches Richmond

The outbreak of swine flu in Clifton Hill has spread south along Australia’s busiest road, with several new cases reported in Richmond.
“We have concerns for the welfare of at least 22 people, and fears that the epidemic could spread as the public converges for the football over the weekend,” said Victoria’s chief medical officer, Dr Rosemary Lester. “We think the MCG precinct could become a disaster zone by Saturday night.”
Like other exotic viruses that have spread from animals to humans, swine flu originated in an impoverished community where people co-existed in close proximity with pigs. “We think the Richmond outbreak may have occurred when a mob of football journalists gathered at the Punt Road oval on Tuesday,” Lester said. “I mean, have you seen Mark Robinson of the Herald-Sun? Oink! Oink!”
It’s believed that the virus quickly spread to the Richmond Football Club’s senior playing list. “We’ve identified ‘swine’ in players Kane Johnson, Troy Simmonds, Jake King, and a few others,” Lester said. “They then seemed to pass it to captain Chris Newman, who then infected coach Terry Wallace.
“We have grave fears that many of these people won’t survive beyond this year. Wallace in particular is a week-by-week proposition.”
Lester said that swine flu is unrelated to another malaise that has afflicted Richmond supporters for almost 30 years, explaining: “Whine flu is an inherited mental condition for which there appears no hope of a cure”.
