Agree however I think the voting in the rising star by Shifter Sheehan reflected his bias
As good as Walsh was. Some commentators had him winning it by round 12 regardless who popped up.
It was like they weren't allowed to swap their selection.
After watching footy for so long, i still think Stack had "best impact" first season of any junior ive seen, including Judd, Ablett and Castagnafield.
The kid is a gun.

This did raise the question, is there another with a better first year than Knighta's debut in 1988.

I have to admit it was a challenging task but I raise you Craig Ednie……...

Check out the stats

matty knights 4 games 63 disposals 3 goals 0 clearances
craig ednie 7 games 69 disposals 3 goals 13 clearances

Yes just taking the ****! Knighta had a great second year while Ednie never played again.

However it is a great subject, best first year since say 1988. Personally I think Richo is hard to go past. Name an 18 year old key forward in the modern game to do what he did. Took Spud to the cleaners in his first game. Duncan Kellaway had a very handy first game too that day and a more than handy first year;
Lids played every game and won the Rising Star in his debut year. Dusty also played every game, bar one, and was hailed as a future superstar.

Yes i did consider them, along with a few other notable first years eg Vloss, Trent Nichols, David Rodan but in terms of difficulty, an 18 year old coming in, first year in the system and averaging almost 7 marks a game straight out of the blocks is highly unusual. In fact that's about the same number of marks Wayne Carey averaged over his whole career (just for some perspective).

After seeing Richo for about 12 or 14 games, the club had no issue trading their main stay key forward Jeff Hogg for a couple of handy players from Fitzroy in Broderick and Michael Gale, Dundas was also thrown in.

All great debuts though one must admit. It was clear from Lids and Dustys first years that we had special players on our hands.

Considering Stack had a late start to pre-season, he could be anything and i for one am buckling in to enjoy the ride!

It's the range of abilities Stack showed that sets him apart for a kid. You just don't see a highlight reel like his from an 18yo. Was game to try anything, and most of it came off.

While we have several promising young players coming through, at this stage Stack's the big hope concerning future elite players.

Agree with you on Dusty, Lids and Stacky.
Royce Hart had an outstanding debut season, he kicked 59 goals, could've been nearly 80 if he kicked straighter. He captivated me as a little tacker, just like Stacky did this season.

Just watching the highlights from his first game in the seniors you knew the kid was special. The only issue is self-discipline and not getting ahead of himself if rumours of the disciplinary issues are true.

As for not winning the Rising Star, meh. That will go to a consistent midfield accumulator like Walsh most of the time. Walsh will be a handy player over the journey, Stack could be anything.

Stacky is a gem. Had he not got injured he might have matched Royce. But playing for Victoria after playing 4 senior games and kicking 7 against West Australia as well as starring in finals in a premiership year is hard to top.

Interesting those stats back up what some of us were saying: that Stack is even better up forward than down back. I think he comes back into the forward line, with Shai moving to Brando's wing. I could see Sydney pushing 40 goals.

If we grab Kysiah Pickett at 19,

The Stackman/KP 1,2 punch will be as breathtaking as a MP clockwise pirouette in a GF.

I know its Stackmans thread, but he'd love a KP quote on board

when asked about KP, his u18 coach said

'he likes to make the opposition **** themselves. he gets off on it'

if he's there tigers, take him at 19.

he's the closest footballing thing to Stackman in existence I reckon.

Only good thing about Stackman being injured, (and Graham for that matter), is we got the Fairytale of Marlion. Devastating for those boys but everyone loves a fairytale.

I love Kozi too. There are a few clubs ahead of us who would be mad not to pick him. Port should snap him up with one of their three first-rounders.

This is what I reckon sets the Stacka apart from the Walsh type players.
Walsh very very good player, accumulates n plays footy like he's painting by numbers, doesn't do much of anything wrong, stays within the lines n gets all the colours in the right places.
Stacka plays OMFG did you see that footy, he's a Van Cough, Micky Angelo type player. Footy ground is his blank canvas n he can do whatever he likes on it 'coz it'll be farking awesum.

The quality of players we have brought into the club the last few seasons is staggering considering we haven't had any high end draft picks

I reckon the Stackman has a lot of Royce Pro Hart in him.

Couldn’t agree more.
When making my initial comments about Stack, I took potential into account. He does things that tell me he’s going to be absolutely top shelf if he sticks to the plan.
Otherwise he has a future with Tony Bartuccio

Good discussion about best first year players. A few days ago Rhett Bartlett tweeted some video footage of Dale Weightman’s debut game. Unbelievable how good he looked. Kicked 3 as well.
