T. Roach, A. Raines on SEN shortly

Will more than likely be delisted at the end of the season. Another wasted draft pick.

At best he should have been rookie listed, or taken with a pick similar to the one we used on Raines.

The announcement was used to deflect some media attention after a flogging from St Kilda and just another example of our poor/stupid recruiting decisions during the Frawley era.

Took Wallace one week to work out that Roach couldnt cut it at AFL level. Was lucky to get that game, and by mid-season, should have been playing VFL reserves his form was so ordinary.

But was good enough to get into the best players list on several occasions in the second half of the season? No offence DF, but that doesn't sound like a VFL seconds player to me.

I'll take that on board, and I will say that later in the season, when he was played as a tagger Roach improved slightly on his form.

But, there was a point during the season, somewhere around the middle, that he was spending most of the day sitting on his bum, or running up and down the boundary, with Flood too scared to put him on the park.

To me his football awareness is very poor. His only thought when he gets the ball is to take off at 100 miles an hour in a straight line, and his only move out of trouble is a generally unsuccessful sidestep that reminds me of Fiora.

His skills arent up to scratch at the moment either, and are something he must improve if he is to stay on the list. I hope he proves me wrong and comes on in leaps and bounds this year, but he hasnt shown me enough to suggest he will.

i reckon we'll see roach break into the team as a tagger by the season end replacing the chaffed one

Not sure about that one. I kind of remember that the tagger role was given to Roach by Flood early in the VFL season. Halfway through the season, I remember comments about him being much relieved that he didn't have to deal with that role anymore. Doesn't bide well for him taking up the role of a tagger again.

PS: When I first started posting on PRE, someone asked me about our picks in the 2003 draft. I recall that my response was a cheer when I heard that we'd picked Hartigan. He was our first decent pick of that draft. I think Hartigan was our 5th pick at no.70.

Ive said from day one young tommy roach will not make it in the big league. He simply is not up to afl standard and is a shadow of his father.

Will be gone after next season.

I wonder if perhaps Doof Doof is suffering from a similar problem to the one that afflicted a certain young Tuck.
Not only is it a huge task for any 18 year old kid to cut it at AFL level but most kids that are taken as sons of club legends really struggle to be accepted for the players they are but are dismissed as only being a shadow of their fathers glory.

Not so sure about that.

Clearly because of the difference in physical characteristics there were no similarities between older and younger Roach. What is certain is that Roach, along with a couple of other recruits of that season, should have been given the time to be fully tested amongst his peers at the highest junior levels before being recruited to the Tigers.

Roach, surprisingly in his first year, did show ability to cope at VFL and got promoted to AFL. His second year has been disappointing. Hopefully his third will be a vast improvement.

It is too late to cast stones at the person whom had the NOT so brilliant idea to recruit players prematurely, ie, being overly under-aged selections. We can only learn from this mistake and not repeat it.

Don't think the players size or onfield position bears any relevance to most supporters phantom, they compare the kid to the hero status of the dad from the word go and they virtually never rate regardless of their capability. The fact that their fathers were champion players only means that clubs will pick their kids ( just in case) and makes it twice as difficult for the kids to prove their worth.
Would love to see young Roach and Raines both make it but have more doubts about Roach than Raines.
Perhaps with the age factor it would have been smarter to let both kids have an extra year to develop against their own group as we were the only club able to get them under father son.
