Just a note to all,

VP = Visy Park, not Victoria Park.

That's Princes Park in disguise.

Or "Princess Park" as we used to say in the old days. ;)

Re: TAC Draw - 2009 - Rnd 1

To the General Manager of the TAC Cup,

Let me tell you how much of a disgrace today’s double-header opener, at Visy Park, was.

There was not ONE Canteen open today for anyone to buy even a bottle of water, let alone something regular like a soft drink, coffee or any food.

Also, there were no TAC Records available for those of us who were interested in following the football.

It was a disgrace.

It would be a disgrace for any local country or suburban ground to host a game putting on such a poor show.

It’s a bigger disgrace that this was a major city ground hosting the competition double-header.

You should reconsider having anymore games at Visy Park until either the TAC or Carlton FC can take responsibility as hosts.

As the Secretary of a local suburban cricket club, our club met its responsibilities when hosting the Association’s finals series. And the Association’s Executive would have had my hide if I’d failed in my responsibility as host.

You’re the General Manager and it is your responsibility to ensure that the Carlton FC, or yourselves, meet the responsibilities of being a host.

The buck stops with you.

With anger,
Michael Pahoff

Re: TAC Draw - 2009 - Rnd 1

Went to the GC v Eastern game last night. The second half was played in torrential rain so it was hard to get much out of the game. I reckon it will take GC a few weeks to come together but last night they were outclassed and outmuscled. GC look like they have a fait few softies in the side. I went with a friend of mine who umpires at QAFL state league level. He mentioned how much more physical TAC Cup was compared to QAFL U18. Not too much defensive stuff in QAFL U18 apparently and this looks like it might filter through the GC. But a few more weeks against similar opposition and they'll soon learn the importance of defensive stuff and, hopefully, harden up a bit.

Bit hard to work out who was who as I didn't have a team list but thanks to Phantom's link to the Record I can now put some names to numbers.

For GC - the big fella Zac Smith looks super promising. Does good things around the ground and is strong below his knees at ground level for a big guy.
Number 12, Jack Stanlake also looks a good prospect up forward. The bloke from PNG, Pirika (who is listed as no.45 but was wearing 33) has all the attributes to make it as an AFL player except for kicking. He looks great chasing the ball and his movement with the ball is great but he is still learning the art of kicking the sherrin, particularly kicks across his body.

For Eastern - I was most impressed by Benjamin Griffiths up forward. He went off injured in the second half but this bloke does some special stuff, he's a good mark and his kicking for goal was exceptional in the slippery conditions (as it was generally for the entire team). I'm surprised to see that he is listed at 100kg, he looks a lot more mobile than that.

Dandenong
Ryan Bastinac (midfielder);
Myles Pitt (keyforward);
Jim Cottrell (half-back)

I heard Gary Lyon on MMM's breakfast show on Monday mentioning that a player to look out for from the Stingrays is an 18 y.o. called Tom Scully who actually called MMM when he heard Lyon mention his name on the radio. He mentioned he's a Richmond supporter.

Any idea what he's like?

Phantom,

What is you opinion on griffiths. i like him from last year.

Had mixed feelings about Griffiths last year.
The main one was that he wasn't ready.

Spoke to Ben today at Box Hill Oval.
He was on crutches as a result of a mishap in the Gold Coast game.
Ankle was only lightly strapped though, with little swelling.
Asked him if he was going to play next week.
He hoped the Doc would let him do so.

I'll give you a rundown of my observations of Eastern v Sandy shortly.
In short, an easy win to Eastern, and I'm very impressed with the quality of the Eastern midfield.

griffiths, he did the AIS program down at punt road last year from what i read. we could do with another power forward.

what's your opinion on luke mcdonald of eastern phantom?? 195cm key forward. turning 19 in april i think. so slightly over-aged. but kicked 5 and 8 in the first two rounds.

Yes, I saw his 8 goals yesterday.

You know that I suggested McDonald as a late pick up just before he hurt himself prior to the 2007 draft.

To me, not alot of difference between McDonald & Hughes. Similar players.
Both are lead up players.

McDonald had both a weight & experience advantage over his opponents.
McDonald's had about 4 years in the TAC, including a year out for a leg injury.
Does now look slow though.

Still, 196cm, is a key forward, 19yo, and can kick goals.
Maybe worth a rookie pick, but how many marginal key talls does the RFC list need?

Should do the summary on the game yesterday.

The best players, Gysberts & Hutchins, were off at Telstra Dome anyway receiving their AIS guernseys. (Then getting thrashed by the Seagull VFL team.)
And, as said, Ben Griffiths was on crutches from the GC game.

Basically it was the Eastern midfield running over their Sandy opposition.
And, for a change, the Eastern midfield used the ball well.

Jayden Cass, 179, 65, was their best midfielder. Very good kick on the right foot, until he tired late in the game.

Aiden Kennedy, 191, 79, was the damage player. Ran around the ground picking up possessions and slotted 4 running goals too.

Ben Wilson, 196, 90, looked good too, as a tall fwd who can bring other players into the game. Plus he kicked 2 or 3 goals.
We've spoken about McDonald in the prior post.

Damon Fent, 185, 81, got good ball but dinks it when he kicks, which is a worry.

David Mirra, 185, 77, got quite a fair bit too, and kicked well.
Also, Aaron Young, 186, 75, same.

Aaron Mullett, 181, 67, looks a likely BP type, but could be a '92 "GC" boy.

Andrew Moore, 188, 81, looks a dead-ringer for our Kel Moore, at the same age.

A couple of good Eastern possie getters were marred by poor kicking & decision making - Ryan Wilson, Matt Scott, James Crowle, and I mentioned Fent.

For Sandy,

The highlight was 206cm Max Gawn. (206,97
206cm, and he can run, mark & kick accurately. Played mostly in the ruck, dominated it, and still kicked 4 or 5 goals while resting up forward.
You can mark Max Gawn down for November.
Yes, just scrapes in with Dec '91.

Jonno Nash, 188, 84, looked good in a lossing side. Running like a terrier, kicking long & fairly accurately, plus 1 goal.

Patrick Liston, 184, 79, got a heap of the ball, but makes poor decisions and can't get the ball within 10 yds of his target.

Others, Ben Jacobs, 184, 81; Tom O'Sullivan, 173,74; Sam O'Sullivan, 186, 80; Kwarne McHarg, 177,77, came in and out of the game.

Declan Reilly, 194,77,Dec'92, Caulf Gmr, is very young with a big reputation but didn't fire. Just a goal.

Article in todays Herald Sun on Scully, already being touted as a possible no 1 draft pick.
