Tackling and Pressure

Our first five rounds tackling (with opponent's):

54 (82)
51 (55)
56 (59)
56 (56)
54 (61)

Doesn't seem to be any discernable improvement. We're yet to out-tackle our opponents.

Why was the pressure against the Roos perceived to be so much better? (I haven't seen the game yet.)

We were just tackling in packs... and tackling much harder. As an example, Jackson disclocated Harvey's arm with a tough tackle.

Whenever the Roo's had the ball, there were Tigers chasing them down... hard... There was much less "oh i'll just pretend to chase" rubbish...

We just gave the Roo's much less time and space to do their thing. Something that we've always been terrible at.

Pressure brings skills errors. We pressured and the Roos had skills errors.... it's usually us getting pressured. We looked more like a Northey coached side last night.

McMahon hardly had a skill error... I thought he was much improved. Obviously benefited by getting dropped to VFL.

This is why we won the game. That sort of pressure on north had them fumbling and making poor decisions with the ball.

Tough footy, is what is wanted. It is a shame that it took March's comments along with everthing else that has happend to get these players to play a 4 q effort of pressure.

It was great to watch. :clap

it's one thing to commit a skill error, but another thing to decide how to respond. I don't like seeing players feel sorry for themselves after stuffing up, much prefer to see them jump straight back in to try and recover the ball or whatever. I saw more of that tonight.

Also I saw an interesting contrast. At the end of the second quarter we tried that stupid tempo mode, keepings off for 2 minutes and eventually gifted the roos a late goal. At the end of the the third quarter the guys played as if they were unaware of the time and it looked much better.

Pretty sure Richmond had 100 or 33% more disposals than the Roos aswell (400 to 300 I think it was), so makes it hard to have more tackles than the opposition when they don't have the ball.

Our hardness at the ball, pressure on the defensive end and tackling is what won us the game tonight.

Those three attributes are what wins every game. And that's why we lost our first four, because tonight was the first time we displayed any of the above.

Exactly. When you attack the man and the ball it forces errors. This corelling crap just gives them time to find an option. We do and always have looked a much better side when we tackle and pressure the opposition.

I don't think out skills were that much better last night, they just looked better because we played a more direct brand of football.

Yet again we proved when we move the ball with speed and purpose we look much more at home and much more likely to score.

Loved Nahas game last night. He was the classic example of what a bit of confidence can do for a kid.
