Taking questions for President Peggy O’Neal

As a foundation club and one of the biggest clubs in the AFL, why did we miss out on a licence for a women’s football team?
Especially as we have led the way in women’s participation by appointing the first female president.

Why can’t we attract star out of contract or free agency players to our club? These players seem to choose anyone but us.

What changes are planned for RFC to have a more successful year in 2017? What does the Board intend to do to avoid more of the same?

Dear Peggy, Damian Hardwick is on record as saying he would resign when we stopped improving. This is clearly the case. .....

Can anyone please provide a link to that quote? I remember it being discussed but can't find it.

Peggy could you please elaborate on the premiership coaching traits that the board believes Hardwick possesses?

On Dimma, this is the kind of question we want. The club has stated repeatedly that they think he's got what it takes, so the question is, what and why? (they have gone into it but it would be a good targeted question)

Also I'd like to see a question in there about the context in which the club has to work, along the lines of easy's question. The concessions to the expansion clubs and academies, the Leagues management performance and response over the Essendon drugs scandal, the feeling amongst us Tigers supporters that they take us for granted because we never go anywhere while they prop up Melbourne (and Ess, MacLachlan's comment 'the competition needs a strong Essendon' but we can apparently please ourselves), and go all out to win a GWS/ GC flag to manufacture interest. As a heavy-hitting woman from the US, I'd like to hear her views on the parochial closed-shop boy-club culture of the AFL hierarchy. Something incorporating those factors and relating it to the clubs working environment.

Id rather see a category on this rather than one on say finances, you can just look up the annual report for that, which provides full disclosure.

A fair few questions being suggested have already been answered repeatedly, and will be answered in the same way, eg, question 'why can't we land a big fish? (answer, its hard to move a star player, we've inquired about a few, and had a go at AT but he chose to go elsewhere but I'm happy with our attempt, we will continue to work at it).

I'll do a poll later this arvo with some things that are being asked and we'll go with the 5 that get the most votes.

Great questions.

You've raised a couple of points I would have liked to ask. Maybe you can answer them for me.

What was the reason given for signing DH pre-season?

I don't know how to read financials. Would we still make a profit if it wasn't for supporter donations ie JDF? Does our membership money go towards funding the Indigenous Centre and other non-football initiatives?

I'm just one vote rosy. But the reason for signing Dimma is, basically, they think he's got what it takes but need to improve the list, great coach works hard, as Benny said the other day, just because you haven't won a flag doesn't mean you aren't a good coach, we get to see him at close quarters, given us a clear vision, etc etc. Its been answered all year. Its the corporate line, right or wrong, that will be repeated. That's why a more specific question would be better along the lines of yandb's, and other that include KPIs.

Any general questions that people have already made up their minds on, like 'Do regret signing Dimma?' 'Would you have re-signed Dimma in hindsight?' etc etc will just get the pat response. As it should, they have made their decision and have to back their man, at least in the short term, anything else would be reactive and rudderless at this point.

Also I reckon a woman of your intelligence can read financials rosy. Especially the summary page, which is all I ever read. Its just plus and minus $$$. But again, if people think financials is controversial, no worries, ask a question. I just don't think it is.

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't heard any comments about why DH's contract was extended so early. That still doesn't explain why to me but it's probably all we'd get.

I don't really think financials are controversial but I do think they are very concerning. If we happen to be making a loss if you take away the JDF donations it would be worrying. It's not an eternal well we can dip into. It's got us out of debt but people will eventually say enough is enough. We've made the finals 3 years in a row and have record memberships and good attendances, though not so much lately, so if we can't make a profit on that we could be in trouble.

As for membership money going to non-football initiatives that is only my self interest. No doubt the financials would detail such things but I don't know how to read them. Accountants can be very creative.

Fair enough, you've convinced me on the financials/ JDF question.

Also fair enough on the Dimma question, which is why a very specific targeted question is the way to go, what KPIs? What are 5 qualities he has that make a good coach? What is Dimma's vision? (without giving away secrets because obviously she can't), something like that.

Haha that's funny. I guess I'm intelligent enough but I've been suffering health wise recently. With hyperparathyroidism, hypercalcaemia, hyopthyroidism and my body not absorbing vitamin B12 for some as yet unknown reason my cognitive functions have taken a massive hit in the last few months. :crazy

Agree with the wording being important and how you've said it is how I intend to word it in the poll.

For example a conglomeration from several comments on here...

Damien said he’d leave if we stopped improving. By many measures this season has been a football failure so firstly a 3 point question about the coach. Why was his contract extended so long before it expired, does it have any performance clauses and what are the attributes the Board and Brendan see that indicate Damien will be a premiership coach?

And when are you going to sack him?

I wonder if this can be telecast. it would be fun to have the worm on screen while she's answering

Love it. Who should be on the other side?

I reckon we might call an end the the questions. We've covered heaps of things. Will try to get a bit of law and order going and put the poll up in an hour or two.

1/ When is Richmond going to return to being a Football Club with the primary aim of being successful on the field instead of continuing to drift further into involvement in non-core activities that seem to either be used to justify increased staff numbers or pander to the personal agendas of those currently in control?

2/ If those currently running the club are possibly failing in achieving the aims that the club was established to do, how long should they be allowed to remain in charge before realising that they are doing more damage than good?
