Talking Politics

Yeah all of that is really nice …but the fact is that despite the abysmal performance of the worst PM this country has ever had, and the nationwide contempt for him, Albanese STILL trails Dud-mo in the preferred PM stakes.

That is damning.

now now Redders, did Albo *smile* in your beer at uni or something? - newspoll shows Scumo ahead after Albo had hit the front briefly last time IIRC, Resolve (Nine/Age/SMH) showed Albo ahead. Albo consistently gaining ground for the last few months.

Preferred PM is a bit of a dud stat anyway IMO, voters don't vote for the PM, only the senate and their local member... has some influence on general voting perhaps.

It doesn’t matter AA whether Albanese is close. The fact is he should be streets ahead.

Agree Red.
Labor chose poorly, again. So many better options.
But hey after a thousand pages on this thread, I'd hate to go on about it.

There has been no questions put to Slomo such as "Why has no one been held responsible for Robodebt?", or "Who paid for Christians' legal fees?", or "Why is a minister who was stood down still in the cabinet?" or many, many others.

Michael Rowland on ABC News Breakfast did grill him on this this morning to his credit.

He's shown near zero ability to capitalise on what's been a horrondous, error riddled, corrupt and negligent period of government - the likes of which I've never seen before.

You don't need MSM on its own to project, and on that front, he's got little to no skills what so ever. Zero cut through with the electorate. None. Just like Shorten - a fact that was well recognised by senior ALP leaders at the last election, particularly by Marles and Chalmers who said they'd tried to do a lot of work on the personality, drive and projection front with Shorten but acknowledged it was still a considerable factor in the election result. Doesn't seem they've learnt anything.

Albanese has little to no charisma that can capture the imagination of the generally uninvested voter - of which there are many if not most. Without going over the top, needs to be more assertive and on the front foot.

Who actually IS Anthony Albanese ? Does anybody know ?
Who is Scott Morrison? Probably depends on the day, or the hour, or his (or his party's) latest *smile* up.
Seriously whatever issues Albanese has there is no excuse to vote for Scott Morrison, who is a fraud, a fake, a charlatan. And has been proven to be a disastrous prime minister.

Agree with all of that. Which is why I’m saying it’s alarming that Albanese doesn’t have a commanding preferred PM lead on him.

Geez, Labor could nominate someone as unpopular as jb03 and he’d still be preferred over Dud-mo.

(Ok that’s an exaggeration but you get what I mean.)

The reason Albanese "isn't known" by voters after 3 years as opposition leader and umpteen years as a polititian, in government and in opposition, has to be partly the blame of our biased mainstream media. ( i'vs got a theme going today)

Albo: gives solid performance at National Press Club,
News directors at channel 7, 9 and 10: "Lets play the clip of Scomo playing ukelele"

I am voting independent in this election but seriously if I hear one more LNP politician say that Labor cannot manage the economy and they tax and spend I’ll throw something at the TV.
There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that. In fact I have seen on here and elsewhere that the highest taxing governments in our history are in in fact LNP. We have by far the highest debt in our history and yes we have a pandemic but have a look at what was happening pre COVID.
I’m no apologist for either but this is just folklore. It has no basis in fact.
Let’s just get these frauds out. I’m tired of the election campaign already

The only thing Albo did wrong was the way he answered it. Should have just used the old 'I'm not entirely sure of the exact number but I'll find out for you'. Or do what Morrison does & just deflect or re-frame the question.

It's such a small issue in the big picture. Get on with it.

He should have known it. 18 months the reserve bank has had rates at 0.10%. And then wasn’t even within 1% of the unemployment rate. As a former banker and as someone who studied economics at university he has no excuses. This should have been right in his wheelhouse.

Those that vote on climate change will already vote Albo.

Those that want better health care will vote Albo.

Those that want more respect for women will vote for Albo.

He has just given Slowmo a huge freekick to who the better economic managers are. So those that vote on that as their biggest principle may have turned on Albo today.

Day 1 of the election campaign, don't think it will make much difference.

One thing though, Albo should be giving his advisors a complete bollocking, they are supposed to have a cheat sheet for just this sort of silly question.

My answer would have been to deflect to falling real wages. Gotta keep to the message and that is a message they can sell because we all notice how we are going backwards while the current government opposes anything that looks like a wage rise.

Lying and bullshitting obviously doesn't come as naturally to Albo as it does to Scomo.

They might "get it", but they won't admit it.
At least Albo admitted he had no idea on a couple of pretty well politicised questions.
This mob wear Labor coloured glasses.
Labor didn't have to do anything special or complex, just appoint the right person for the job. Failed with Shorten and then double downed with Albo. Probably still win but have made it possible to lose again.
We will continue to hear how dumb Aussie's are, we will hear that Murdoch is running the country and brainwashing Aussies. At the end of the day, the only credible Aussies vote Labor.

Even with a chance to prepare for the question Scomo technically got the cashrate wrong

The current cashrate is 0.06%

The Target Cash rate is 0.10%

Link to the RBA's Money Market Spreadsheet (download) - https://t.co/1953Q5Tiwp

And it doesn't mean much to have a cash rate as 0.10% when the banks are charging 2+% for your mortgage at absolute best anyway. Just a typical gotcha question intended to generate headlines. Which it surely has, but doesn't add anything substantial to the debate on economics. It is not necessary for our leaders to have a perfect memory for all of the economic statistics at all times. That is what spreadsheets are for.
