Talking Politics

Whether an individual agrees or disagrees with Julian Burnside is up to them but he is no fraud. He passionately believes in causes and has created charities to provide free legal services and accomodation for refugees as well providing enormous amounts of probono legal representation himself.

Of course he is a barrister and QC and I would assume he also does lots of work for which he is very well remunerated.

Think what you like about his views but he is no fraud.

So why did he relinquish a 40 year membership at a men only club? Image? Fraudulent behaviour.

true. the 'right' never protest violently. they generally just stick to Nazi salutes. (we will ignore Cronulla as that wasnt really a protest).
Oh dear.

I have never looke d up this Milo blokes material. I am missing out on anything I cannot read in say ABolts columns? Or hear on Sky if I took out a subsciption? What specific attributes does he have thatattracts Australians to his message? Why will people pay to hear him and not a more local commentator?

So all he does for the refugee community is fraudulent because he was a member of a club with just men in it?

Yeah sure

how good is Australian politics right now? the Libs smashed in Victoria and resigned to at least 2 more terms in the wilderness. The Libs on track to lose in NSW. and we're on the verge of seeing the biggest federal election wipeout in many a year.

and good look to the schookids in their protest today.

It’s good if you just barrack for one side but if Australian politics really was good right now we’d have at least 2 (ideally more) quality parties with quality politicians and policies etc.

Odd counter argument.
Wasn’t meant to be. Simply meant to point out that Julian burnside does a lot in the space he talks about a lot , including enormous amounts of probono work and running refugee charities which gives him the right to not be called a fraud for his beliefs, whether you agree with them or not. He is an advocate but also an active supporter and worker for those he advocates for.

Whether he is a member to the Atheneum club (or whatever club it is) doesn’t change what he does for refugees. It’s an irrelevancy.

Not good for anyone other than the ALP and it's financial backers

Yep.

Crap and even crapper imo

Fine so long as he pays his police bill, which he hasn't.

Why would he need to pay a police bill? The organisers of a protest should be paying the police bills.

He should be paying for security to make sure his paying customers are safe.

Agree.

I still feel for older Australian’s who have retired with a SMSF or looking to retire with a SMSF. The shares they own won’t get the franking credits. Many need this income to support themselves. Perhaps they should cap it at $20,000 to be refunded so that they can remain self funded. Many who have taken out SMSF have done so on the advice of a financial planner or accountant. If they had left their money in a Union owned industry super they would effectively get their franking credits back. With a influx of people considering their options do the ALP have a conflict of interest on this issue? Since the unions are their major backers.

It will undoubtedly hurt people and we should look at doing it progressively however the unfairness is not in the changes the ALP wants to bring in but in the change in the legislation by the Howard government in the early 2000s. It should never have been brought in.

The original philosophy was that profits that create dividends should not be taxed twice but they should be taxed at the company tax rate. By bringing in cash refunds for low income earners the profits that have created those dividends now don’t get taxed at all. The company tax paid on them is returned in cash to the recipient of the dividend.

As an example if the only income I receive is a $7000 dividend under the current law I get income of $10000 in my tax return and a franking credit if $3000 which I get back in cash. That $3000 is the tax the company paid on $10000 profit and now I have it not the ATO. Once my marginal tax rate is 30% or above under the ALP change I will get the franking credit which ensures that $10000 is never taxed at more than 30%.

The change is absolutely fair but I agree we need to phase it it so people have time to rearrange their affairs

Was he embarrassed about his image? Can only assume he endorsed the club by signing up for 40 years. Or did the auto renew catch him out each year.

What else isn’t he authentic about?

Police act as security in these instances, if he wants to pay for private security instead then fine.

Fraser Anning. What a *smile*.
He'll be out in a couple of months only to be replaced by another basket case.

These nutjobs get into parliament by dragging on the coat tails of other nutjobs like Pauline Hanson then become "independent" once they are in, answering to no-one.

Next one I reckon will be Mark Latham.
