Talking Politics

Interesting that Clive Palmer can spend millions advertising his Party but can't find the money to pay his ex employees who he left in the lurch!

Like choosing what one would prefer out of Chlamydia or Syphilis.

Chlamydia isnt that bad. Asymptomatic and often resolves itself.

Syphilitic Scott, on the other hand, your extremities fall off, you go mad, and die.

so, yeah, agree

whilst on STD euphemisms, I reckon Clive Palmer is a mutated genital ebola

All 3 of these conditions respond well to appropriate antibiotics.
On the other hand there is no cure from a Shorten/Di Natale government....just pain!

Pain from both sides. But ALP marginally ahead for me as they wouldnt be as embarrassing as the Libs have been. I mean, they couldn't. No one could.

I did the ABC vote compass and it's become apparent why I really struggle to place my vote at all. I sit in a quartile of their model that doesn't align with where any of the major parties (or the Greens or One Nation) sit. It is a totally blank quartile in terms of political representation.

I was listening to abc on the way home from work last night. Hinch and a labor guy whose name I can’t recall were being interviewed. Hinch was mostly articulate and spoke positively.

The labor guy was mainly critical of the govt - on preselection of candidates as well as the leadership revolving door. He didn’t have the self-awareness to reflect on the activities of his own party. The coalition does the same thing -play the man, rather than focus on policy.

For this rusted on conservative, I have to find a way to reward neither major party - and avoid the fringe parties.

Australians deserve better than both the Liberal and Labour parties.
It would probably create chaos, but if everyone voted independent, the smug parasites would take less notice of their lobbyists mates and start to listen to the Australian electorate.

Baloo, remember when Rudd, Julia, Rudd, Abbot and Turnbull were the other choice though. Now Shorten.
I know if I was given a choice between the 6 of them I would have Shotenpolicydetailnonexistant a close 6th to a challenging Rudd in the race. He is a big enough embarrassment to "politics" for even the hardened left to see through and cringe at.
Apparently electric cars are powered by free energy. Who would have thunk it?

Two points on EVs.

I have worked in a related industry for the past decade and our assessment is that we may get to 10-15% of new sales by 2030. Not 50% as Shorten has said - even with incentives. (Crazy that the Libs got sidetracked with the crap about Electric Utes for tradies along the way.)

Second, it is facile to suggest EVs are cleaner. The electricity that is used to charge 'em comes from the network, which is predominantly coal today. I reckon a far more appealing policy is to find out how (if?) Scandinavia is delivering sustainable energy at a lower cost and then put relevant, short-term incentives in place to assist in the transition.

I remember all of them. Putting Shorten behind Abbott just shows you're a rusted on Liberal voter. No politician in Australia's history has been more embarrassing than Abbott, by a mile.

Agree that Abbott has been a disgrace.

Agree with the sentiment that both major parties are disappointments. A change in gov't won't change much in my life, although the Libs have gone too far right for my liking. A change may be good for the nation.

Shorten is the least impressive politician I can recall. He is the only element preventing a labour landslide IMO

For me its simple the LNP have been demonstrated to be corrupt, therefore they need to go and clean up the parties. If the ALP ends up the same well they lose the next election.

Not sure we deserve better. We've become a population that just wants handouts from the Government. The thought of addressing Negative Gearing and franked credits create fear and anger amongst the population because we're so used to being given this money for nothing / tax avoidance loopholes.

When the population is hell bent on handouts and resistant to any change that lets us think we're avoiding taxes, both major parties will pander to the people in search of votes.

Use of franking credits is not a handout in general. Preventing profits from being taxed twice is a fair strategy. Whether superfunds should be entitled to refunds of this money is another question. But I don't want to invest in a company, receive a dividend that has already been taxed and then have to pay tax again on it at my marginal rate.

Try working in tax for a while, the amount of people I did tax for that were earning good dollars who enquired about the benefits they were entitled to (childcare, family tax benefit, spouse rebates, health care cards...etc etc) was amazing. And when you tell them they are not entitled to anything they would sook about how much tax they paid and they got nothing from govt. Pretty depressing how many want benefits.

election result aside, it will be the best thing ever if Abbott and Dutton get knocked over in their seats. they should never be in power again. ever.

what? have you been putting a coin in the slot, before applying the LeTan and lying on the beach?

FWIW, I think Democracy is a bit *smile*.

and Murdoch and Zukkerberg are largely to blame.

Look at the *smile* we get to choose from and the pissweak *smile* they speak.

I reckon Tony Windsor was one of the last of the civic-minded, relatively unambitious, good-hearted blokes, who thought in timeframes longer than 3 years.

Consider yourself lucky you're easily in a quadrant. I'm so close to the dead smack middle with slight leaning to the economic left, but even that doesn't reach the first line.

Greg Combet was another decent, smart man that unfortunately left politics.

I should add, I wasn't deep into the quadrant, so probably not too far away from you. A little into the bottom left quadrant. Fair to say, culturally I lean moderately conservative, but economically and environmentally centre-left. Puts me in a no mans land compared to the current representative landscape.

Would you put Rob Oakshott in the same category? He's contesting a regional NSW seat, seeking a comeback.
