Oh wow, someone forgot to take their meds this morning.

Government intervention in the free market is a sin and should be punished severely.

In contrast, private manipulation of the market is all fine, you get a prize.

Government made up of elected representatives (on this I agree it is a farce) consisting of an oligarchy of preudo-representatives. Hmm, sounds about right but who are these psuedo-representatives? Oh that's right, it's the same bunch of economically powerful neo-liberals who manipulate every market they can for advantage.

So, the solution is to just give all decisions over to the oligopolies to exploit their economic power?

What a service you have provided! It’s probably best to prepare yourself for ideas that run counter to statism especially given statism is engrained in most people due to the influence of government in education funnily enough.
so your alternative to statism is tribalism?
I wonder how this ends.
please tell me more.

Scott Morrison is considering slashing the $1500 JobKeeper payment or phasing it out faster than expected amid fears it’s creating “zombie” companies that don’t exist without the wage subsidy.

Surely the Government would have put checks and balances in place to prevent this from happening.

Any policy like this that needs to be implemented quickly will have flaws. the choice is quick flawed action or a slower careful response. sometimes it is better to give some money to those that shouldnt get it, than to not give it to those who do.

whether they should now phase it out, or look to correct the issues is a different question.

The Jobkeeper plan is and was always a temporary measure. A "bandaid" if you like. It was never meant to last.

No surprise some companies are existing just on this payment. The Government stated it was a hibernation plan. Now they are working towards awaking the companies from their hibernation. Some wont make it back but most will. Jobkeeper will then be wound back, as will the bonus payment under Jobseeker, and a new type of Jobseeker will take their place.

There were plenty of businesses struggling before any of this COVID 19 and they will struggle to get back. This is a normal course of business even in good economic times.

So we will end up with a higher level of unemployment to fund in the short term and the government will need to manage this and "encourage" the economy to build to increase the number of jobs, which is its normal course of business.

Good to see Agriculture Minister David Littleproud standing up to China on their allegations of Australia illegally dumping or subsidising barley in China this morning. Looks like there is a positive to come out of this pandemic - not capitulating to China's bullying tactics. I imagine that up until now, politicians might have been worried about the voter reaction to the economics of doing that. If China does impose the threatened tariffs, I hope we just find a new major trading partner.

Yes that's fair enough, but they have had time. The JobKeeper scheme was announced in March with the first payments beginning 1 week ago, I wouldn't have thought it would be too difficult to check the eligibility.

Good article IMO from Shane Carney on the new reality of the world Australia is in now. The US is in terminal decline politically and is withdrawing from its strategic responsibilities in Asia - under Trump the political institutions, discourse and culture which made America the light on the hill are all being progressively weakened - and he still might win another term. China is ascendent - we rely on them economically and they can hurt us badly if they want. They are becoming more aggressive in terms of hard/soft power plays.

The new reality doesn't look great - Australia will have to hustle to maintain standards of living, and also come to terms with building stronger partnerships with countries in the region - particularly Japan, India and Indonesia - if we are to maintain a reasonable strategic position.

Great article. Agreed.
Australia needs to dump China for a new major trading partner, Japan, India, Indonesia, South Korea (post-Brexit England?). One who is more aligned with the Australian ideals of democracy, freedom and scientific truth. One that isn't hell bent on regional domination or opposed to democracy and human rights. (Did you see I slipped scientific truth in there? If we keep saying it, it might come true in a post-COVID19-world)

Well, finding a new major trading partner is easier said than done. Indonesia and India don't really need our resources like China does. Changing our economy will take a decade at least.

Good summary. Yeh, manufacturing may start to move more towards India/Vietnam, the issue is transport infrastructure just isn''t there yet in these countries.

Whatever, we either need to re-establish a better relationship with China.

We need to follow Ross Garnaut's recommendations and become a new energy superpower, and we'll be even richer than before.

Instead, expect us to continue to subsidise fossil fuels.

Yep. If only successive governments had the foresight to invest in renewable research and technology. We'd be world leaders in the field. Solar, Wind, Tidal - we have it all in abundance.

Be reasonable, politicians won't get lucrative jobs as oil/gas lobbyists after they leave parliament unless they keep subsiding fossil and nobbling renewables.
