Talking Politics

it is eZy. and they won't reveal his name... and there he sits making decisions for the population ..
the system is sick .. I've always hated it, and considering the past few weeks, i hate it even more ...

Reading between the lines in that story,

And not to be flippant and detract from the horror of the womans experience

But it sounds like a denzyl washington political thriller.

Woman is violated quite horrifically by man. Man becomes powerful. Womans life heads south. Woman writes account and lodges with solicitor (open in the event of my death?). Woman goes to police. Woman withdrawers complaint. Woman dead.

Have i got that right?

Its extremely disturbing on several levels

Yes. But can add woman is bi-polar. Woman went to police and certain politicians in late 2019 after finally deciding to tell her story hoping for justice. COVID arrives and delays all the interviews, stalls everything. The sense of nothing happening after going semi-public was apparently too much for her.

Horrible any way you look at it.

Twittersphere has narrowed it down to 2 Cabinet members from what I can see. Won't mention any names here, especially one of them as he could drown me quite easily if he wanted too.
The liberal government only sink boats in election years. Try to sneak back in before it is called...?

Politics aside, I have some sympathies for anyone accused of rape (if innocent), having had a good friend accused by a psychopathic former partner. The accuser also happened to be a police officer which added to the complexities.
Fortunately for him her story was proven completely false after preliminary investigations before the need to go to court but he went through absolute hell in the lead up. Took a real toll on his mental health.
It's not always the case that men commit what they're accused of, so the court system does need to play out & individuals privacy protected.
Unfortunately when it comes to the system the identity of the female is always protected but the accused males isn't. Unfortunately some mud sticks. Despite her vindictive lies she faced no fallout whatsoever.
Innocent until proven guilty has to be a key part of any justice system.

Not sure she ever withdrew the complaint. She took her own life before the formalities were finished

Unequivocally yes.

But its so complex. I experienced it first hand as chair of a jury on a case where a father was accused of incest.

It was harrowing but the process was fascinating.

Beyond reasonable doubt is a very, very difficult conclusion to arrive at.

Whilst it would be a horrible job, i reckon a defence barrister in historic sex offenses would be relatively easy.

Doubt seems pretty easy to instill amongst 12 people.

We had absolutely no choice but to acquit, but my logic and instinct had it at 50/50.

I suspect theres a lot more innocent people have commited sex offences than the other way around.

I dont have any solutions or suggestions though?

I liked Keating as PM but in hindsight the country probably would have been better off overall if Hewson won because it would have probably prevented Howard from becoming PM.
A very pertinent observation IanG.

Very interesting observation and one I hadn’t really thought of. The Hewson of today is different to the Hewson of those days though but he was never Howard-like

Yes. The reality is that there are unlikely to be legal ramifications for the politician in question for a number of reasons but primarily now it will be pretty impossible to put a case together.
The politician may be innocent of course but in the end individuals are probably going to make their own minds up, which isn’t great in the end.

Interesting article on the Howard legacy

Does anyone else remember this turkey promising before he was elected thet there would definitively NOT bring in a GST. Almost immediately after he was elected sure enough he brings in the GST.
He rationalized it by saying that "it was not A CORE PROMISE".

Another lying scumbag politician.

Yes that’s true but we were exposed then to politics at its worst. The labor party had a lot of people in favour of a GST as well and they opposed it.
Australia at that time had one of the lowest indirect taxes share in the OECD and we needed a GST.
Howard lied about it for sure but in hindsight it was the right decision
The introduction of cash refunds for franking credits and the discount on CGT were terrible decisions and we are still paying for them now, massively

I dont like Howard, but he went to an election with the GST and won, the nature of politics mean pollies have to say things like never when they just mean not now, so i dont think he should cop any blame for that.
plenty of other things he did to complain about tho.
