She is a "celebrity" though JB....

You make her sound like a bimbo from a soapie Livers.

Maxine was a political style reporter/journo on shows like 7.30 Report, Carleton-Walsh Report, AM, PM, The Bottom Line. She could have taken a soft option if she just wanted to cash in on "celebrity" status but she took the tough option by running against the Prime Minister.

Is Peter Costello a lame duck?

Pete looked a very happy man who couldn't wipe the grin off his face if he tried. Unusual when his party had been given the boot but I guess on a personal note he won his seat and looks like being promoted to Leader of the Opposition.

The last bit of this sentence is where we differ. I voted for the best possible future for grandkids and not for a party that will make me personally better off.

I'll be happy to be worse off financially to ensure a better future
.
why are labor going to be better for your or anyone else`s grandkids?
rosy made the same comment.

and how is being worse off financially going to ensure a better future?

Mopsy I think the workplace laws need revising bigtime, thus my comment about voting for the future of my kids.

What I find interesting is your comment (and please pardon me if it's not quite word perfect) that you haven't been able to find full-time work yet you thought the work place laws would improve that in the future. The changes have been in for a couple of years so if they were going to make it easier for you to find full time work you'd think they would have kicked in somewhat by now.

Costello has dogged it on the leadership. gonna resign after this term!

Just heard this!! I am stunned, they need his leadership something bad now.

This would make Turnbull the best profiled to step up, but I imagine you may have Abbott, Nelson, and Downer all throwing their hats in the ring.

I have no idea why Costello has done this...

Why would he change his spots now, bottled it when he had the chance to run against Howard.

Two very different types of leadership style to be in Government and Opposition.

yep, hasnt got it in him to lead from the opposition benches. Howard betrayed him and now he's lost his chance.

You may not like Howard, but he fought to be our PM (which you have to respect). Battled to be Opposition Leader, fought failed elections, came back from the dead, and fought Costello to hold onto power for 11 years.

Like him or hate him, he thought he was Australia's best leader for this time, and he fought for it. THIS is what I expect from a leader.

Costello needs to show this same commitment, and go through the hard yards. If he can rebuild the Libs, and swing the result next election (esp if ALP stuff it up with the unions), the revival combined with his economic record will make him a Liberal hero that will be above Howard in history.

This is a major opportunity lost by Costello, and personally disappointing for me (I was looking forward to seeing him as an aggressive opponent to the ALP, I definitely think he could have done well).

I reckon Costello was just an actor behind Howard and lived in imaginations.

This weekend just gets better and better.

What I really dislike, is Howard is going to abandon politics, and yet still won't concede the seat. He may actually get in, and then retire, forcing an early, and costly by-election in the seat.

This makes Mal Broughs losing his seat sadder.

He would have been a good deputy on his way to leader of the coalition.

I would expect the National party to provide the deputy as usual, unless the Liberals do the smart thing and cut the ties with them.
