Talking Politics

So Nelson got the gig.

Good luck. He'll need it.

This is an odd choice.

The Libs are making it easy for ALP I have to say.

1) Abbott saying he will be hovering like a hawk to challenge for the leadership if it falters
2) Nelson being given the job, when he lacks the profile and stature of Turnbull
3) Nelson way to left for the hardcore right of the Libs (at least Turnbull is economically hard right, Nelson was once an ALP member :))

This has the stink of interim leader to me, like ALP with Crean. Howard forces know they cannot get "their" man up yet (whoever that is), so shove in anyone other than Turnbull, so you can rechallenge in 12-18 months time.

Had to laugh about Abbott though, at the BBQ yesterday he did a count of support for him, 4 votes....including his own :rofl

I think Turnbull was the better choice but Nelson's parliamentary party experience and better numbers game got him the job. A commentator on ABC radio the other pointed this out - Turnbull is an amazingly talented person but has yet to prove himself a leader.

And is not very popular within his own party. He'll backdoor Nelson at some stage.

Turnbull was already starting a "me too" (by saying that Howard should have said 'sorry' and that he backed Rudd in saying sorry)....and also Turnbull is a republican, which would mean another tax-payers waste of money referendum due to the obvious bi-partisan support that would have developed if Turnbull was opposition leader.

At least with Nelson...he may keep the party different to the ALP...and more in line with the "Lib way".
The people will need the true Lib party in the future to fix up the mess Rudd and co. will create....so why try to emulate them?

did you see Nelson on the 7.30 report tonight, Livers?

That show run by Kerry "Kevin07" O'Brien?

Nah...Channel 2 makes me sick (unless Coburg are playing... ;D)

Nelson did ok, Livers. O'Brien was trying to grill him about Turncoat's leadership aspirations, but he played a pretty deat bat to the short balls.

He ducked around the workchoices and Sorry debates but indicated that the Govt had a mandate. Sort of did the Democrat thing about keeping the ALP accountable.

Bit full of himself, but he's a polly afterall.

Going by that lefty rag 'The Age'....it seems he didn't duck around the sorry issue at all:

No 'sorry' from Nelson
November 29, 2007 - 8:36PM
New federal Liberal leader Brendan Nelson says he opposes apologising to the Stolen Generation.
Dr Nelson tonight declined to offer support for Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd's plan to say sorry for past governments' removal of indigenous children from their parents.

I'll post the full article on the 'racial tolerance' thread....but totally agree with it.
A good start Lord Nelson... :clap

Never pictured Nelson as a believer on this issue (my perception only). My gut feel is this is the first of a few concessions he has made to the conservative right Howard supporters to get them onside over Turnbull. Previously the two were almost akin, so whoever moved right was going to win the poll.

Next 2 months will be rubbish, its the 10 after that will determine Nelson's worth (and whether he is a legit candidate for the next election, or just another Crean).

Is this the same flip flop man who used to belong to the Labor party.

He has as much spine as a jelly fish.

My money is still on Turnbull. He is strong enough to say no. Nelson tries too hard to be liked.

More importantly, he was a disaster as defence minister. His decision making on the JSF (buying the Super Hornets are a replacement to the F111's) was made off the cuff, without due dilligence, and was ridiculously expensive.

he struggled with the Kovco tragedy too.

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, "What is Politics?"

Dad says, "Well son, let me try to explain it this way:

I am the head of the family, so call me The Prime Minister.

Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her the Government.

We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you the People.

The nanny, we will consider her the Working Class.

And your baby brother, we will call him the Future.

Now think about that and see if it makes sense."

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said.

Later that night,! he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him.

He finds that the baby has severely soiled his nappy.

So the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother asleep.

Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and see s his father in bed with the nanny.
He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy say's to his father, "Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now. "

The father says, "Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about."

The little boy replies, "The prime Minister is screwing the Working Class while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the Future is in deep s * *t."

Fair dinkum. Its not bad enough that you keep making a fool of yourself by dropping failed rumours all over PRE ? You have to spew forth old and tired gags as well ?

The moderators need to give you a 6 week spell on the sidelines to freshen up.

Brendon Nelson is a dud!

Either a very poor choice or a stop gap measure.

If it was a choice between Downer and Nelson; Downer would win every time.

Just goes to show what an insipid choice Nelson is!

Remember Downer as leader of the opposition?

Good times.

The Empire has burnt to the ground at astounding rate.

What about Labour haveing the anti Nelson wesite up and running inside 3 hours? Just attacking early and keeping the Libs on the back foot. Amazing turnaround, this is some amazing history being made around us.

Looks like camelot is crumbling without King "Honest John"

We're Knights of the Round Table,
We dance whene'er we're able,
We do routines and chorus scenes
With footwork impeccable.
We dine well here in Camelot,
We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.

We're Knights of the Round Table,
Our shows are formidable,
But many times, we're given rhymes
That are quite unsing-able.
We're Opera mad in Camelot,
We sing from the diaphragm a loooot.

In war we're tough and able,
Quite indefatigable,
Between our quests we sequin vests,
And impersonate Clark Gable.
It's a busy life in Camelot,
I have to push the pram a lot.
