Talking Politics

I mentioned last week that Liberal Party internal polls are looking dire for Josh Frydenberg… well I am hearing that Joshie is seriously considering taking the coward’s option and quitting instead of facing his electorate…. Much like his mate Greg Hunt.

Love how our mainstream media here merely regurgitates news from CNN.
Yeah Ukrainian sovereignty is sacred! What about Serbia and Kosovo? What about China and Taiwan? The west and its lackies in the MSM have zero credibility, self-determination to the west is not a core principle (see Catalonia and Spain) otherwise they would be asking what to the people of the Donbas want? Some will want to stay in Ukraine, some will want to be independent, some will want to be part of Russia. Accordingly to the MSM the answer is only the first and that's final.

Reality is the Russian government is prepared to fight to stop Ukraine from joining NATO, an organisation that really has no reason to exist anymore. The West needs to accept that meddling in the internal affairs of Ukraine will simply lead to crisis like we're seeing now. Russia is not a great power and doesn't have the capability to occupy the Ukraine long-term, there is too much opposition from Ukrainians to allow it. I think the best scenario is for the west to deny Ukraine entry into NATO and stop funding initiatives that will provoke a Russian response.

its not just Kooyong. In North Sydney I have heard internal polling is indicating the Liberal primary vote is down a whopping 20%. Gladys' old seat had an 18% swing against in the recent by-election
Yeah, The New Liberals are growing in confidence they can win Nth Syd.

New Libs and Independent Voices will worry any sitting government. I hope they don't contest against each other.

as long as they preference each other- when suitable- their votes will flow to each other.

Most serious candidates of any persuasion will be putting LNP last i reckon.

Even *smile* Palmer will have 2 bob each way this time

Despite Biden’s claims of huge loss of life, I expect the Russians will waltz through the Ukraine with little to no resistance.

I expect so too. And that is the gamble Putin is taking. The Russians don't want a long, drawn out conflict, with body bags going home. Despite perceptions outside of Russia, there is a level of skepticism and unpopularity toward the Russian military within significant quarters of Russian society. It comes from the average family's experiences of their sons doing compulsory national service. And the toxic culture within the Russian military leading to so many deaths from bashings and bastardisation, to training 'accidents' (quite a few likely not accidents). If people can scrounge enough money to bribe govt officials so that their son's can avoid compulsory service, they often do. It's one of the reasons the Kremlin is never transparent when Russian troops have been used in external operations and body bags come home. Often the deaths in these external operations are falsely declared as "training accidents."

Even in Russia authorities are mindful of how a campaign can be lost on the home front when popular support is lost. Not unlike Vietnam for the US, this was not an insignificant factor in the Soviets losing the stomach to keep fighting in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Hard to tell the extent of the invasion at the moment. Is it just the breakaway regions and Odessa or the whole country? Should become clearer soon.

Still can't see how a full scale invasion serves Putin's interests or Russia's interests. Putin ain't stupid, he is up to something, could just be he wants Ukraine badly enough it is worth the cost.
