Interesting to read just how much support is coming out of the woodwork for a Tasmanian side in the AFL.I am sure it has been talked about in the past, and dismissed due to perceived lack of corporates.I wonder if there are any other W.A billionaires who want to sponsor the Tiges.IMO it would be fabulous for the competition if they got a licence, rather than another Sydney side-no passion or grassroots with that venture.GO DEVILS.

I would love to see a Tassie team in the afl, But I don't see how they would ever cope financially.

Yeah but the main feature of the current push is that they are getting the required corporate support behind it.

Agree, the Tassie govt will be a big backer also.

As a tasmanian i would like them to have a club. I would still support Richmond if they did but would probably by a membership to support them for the first few years.

There always is.....................initially!

Inspiring, new concepts are usually easier to get money for than enduring mediocre ones. It ignites people's imaginations. Tassie does not have a great history of sustaining commercial-based sporting clubs in national competitions. It's lacked the critical mass to sustain itself once all the initial hoopla has been extinguished.

Admittedly the cricket team in Tassie has survived but I wonder whether it's the national structure that's supported it's survival than the reverse.

I too would love to see Tassie with a side - it might just give the Tiges another win each season ;)

PS. I think the Sydney Celtics has a better chance of getting up quite frankly as it will get much more AFL support in it's attempt to start globalising the game.

The issue with a Tassie team is that if it gets up in 3 or 4 years time they will be chasing Jack as their marquee player! ;D

Corporate support is a major hurdle I hear all the time.
Bu a Tassie Team will be playing in a national league to a national audiance.
QBE is no only in Sydney
*smile* Smith is not only down bridge road
Hyundai is not only in laigon street
Ford is not only in Geelong
Toyota is not only in dumbsville
Message one and Hungry Jacks are not only in WA.
Lease Plan is not only for the affluent in the western suburbs.

A Tassie team will easily have the corporate support it requires and the state govt always wants to be part of it as it is a sure vote winner - so the financials are never and will never be a problem.

What about number of local supporters.
The population of Tassie is near on 500 000 which is more than a supporter base to draw upon than Geelong!

Infrastucture - York park and bellerive oval are world class venues with world class surfaces.

So the only thing really holding back a Tassie licence is MR Demitriou or as he is known in Tassie - Mr Potato Head!

But one thing is for sure, Tassie's passion for footy and an AFL footy team will never end, but Mr Potato's head tenure as AFL CEO will.

I really think a Tassie AFL team would bankrupt the state within a couple of years. I heard somewhere that it's costs about 40 million a year to run an AFL club while some of the richer clubs spend 50 million. Tassie's VFL team is struggling at the moment so I'm not sure where Tassie would get their base of players from. A lot of Tassie folk are always under the opinion that Tassie AFL stars would return to their home state if a national team ever got up and running but really why would they? Tassie is a beautiful place but why uproot your home on the big island to return home? Also, we don't to many players drafted to the AFL these days anyway. Alot of Tasmanians have got stars in their eyes. I'm a proud Tasmanian but let's get Tassie footy fixed before we start shooting for these stars :-)

Let's get Tassie football fixed first? What about Victorian AFL clubs and their second sides. They don't know whether to go it alone or allign with another club. God if we waited for the perfect setup for everything no AFL club would have existed in the first place. Do you know how much it cost's to have a baby. If you did you would never have one and yet we do. Sometimes you have to take a chance because the benefits of a sustainable Tassie AFL team far outweighs the pesimistic views of those that say the sky will fall if we have a team and everyone in Tassie will be in the poor house.
But you may be right... Just how many AFL players get drafted from the Gold Coast and the Western Suburbs of Sydney?

Couple of nieve posts here.

Firstly, quoting other failed sports teams in the state is completely irrelevant. Tasmanians care only about football & cricket. Nothing else. Also on that basis how many failed basketball teams have there been from Victoria, does that rule them out.

On the cricket team, leysy would think they only enhance tassie's bid. For a state of 500G's, they are far more professional, well run, better performed, younger, have far far better youth development etc than Victoria that has a pop of 3.5 mill or so....

AFL sport has so much exposure across the country that sponsorship wont be an issue, massive govt backing will also ensure the club wont go without.

Anyone quoting the devils lack of success also should be aware this club has no relevance on any AFL team. This is a hobart based team that has no support from any grass roots supporter across the state.

The main issue as always will be two things -

1) EVERYONE supports an AFL team that they are passionate about. Will the majority of supporters swap over to a new team. Dunno.

2) Parochialism - There is a massive Nth/Sth divide. If the club is based in the south, ntherners rightly wont support it. If it is based in Launnie, the whinging southerners will thump there noses.

Which reminds leysy, What's the only good thing to come out of the south of tassie....

...The road North.

The obvious solution is to build a ground at Tunbridge. ;D

Oh well, just a concerned Tasmanian's opinion that's all mate. I wouldn't expect Tassie football fans to become overnight members of a state team, especially if they are on the standard of the current VFL team. The Tassie football bosses are pretty good at waving money at high profile coaches and players and often cry foul when the sh*t hits the fan. We are a rabble.
