The number of Brownlow votes a team receives is a good proxy for how good they really are, and I dont mean where they finished on the ladder.

For the past 20 years (& I havn't looked at the stats to confirm) Richmond has finished near the bottom of the Brownlow ladder, even when we have finished mid table. To me this is a clear indicator that whilst on the rare occassion we have had half decent seasons, I dont think our list has had enough class to be consistently good.

Unfortunately this year was the same, very few votes and typically they go to the usual suspects that really have no hope of winning ie Johnson, Coughlan & Richo. (Notice our All Australian did not pole one vote & I'm not surprised).

Compare our votes to the Bulldogs who finished one game above us, 54 to 81. These guys have young guys with class. We still have alot of drafting to do to get these same type of classy players into our club. Perhaps then we will finally have a better night with Charlie!

disappointed that Tigers did not get 3 votes in games that we won.

maybe we need more media stars in our team to attract umpires

A gentle jibe! Pettifer dragged in 2 votes!!

Apart from that, I agree with all you said. We just don't, at the moment, have one or two players capable of winning a game for us off their own boots. The Cousins, Del Santos, Judds and Wests, stand out, as they have the ability to turn a game around. Maybe over the next year or two, Bling and Lids may fit into this category, but we certainly need more of this type. Until we get them, our Brownlow voting power will always be low.

Plenty of missed votes by umpires this year.

Richo no 3 against the dogs in rnd 3?? They musta been watching a different game.

Also unlucky was matthew pavlich on several ocassions, the main one 18 marks v carlton rnd5, 0 votes.

Umpires miss votes - NEVER!

Sorry but the Brownlow has never really done it for me. Dorks (I'm generalising) trying to select the best footballers - yeah right. With so much on their minds after a game, I wonder how much time actually goes into the voting process now compared to say 30 years ago?

Impossible to believe that our AA & JD medalist didn't poll a vote! ::)

Facinating that eh! Have look umpires!

Have a look at the brownlow winners since 1994...all midfield/running players (Goodes was basically a midfielder the year he won it). No wonder good backs and forwards never get a vote - (read JB/MR)

1994 - Greg Williams
1995 - Paul Kelly
1996 - Michael Voss / James Hird
1997 - Robert Harvey
1998 - Robert Harvey (lucky earning your own ball isn't a criteria)
1999 - Shane Crawford
2000 - Shane Woewodin
2001 - Jason Akermanis
2002 - Simon Black
2003 - Mark Ricciuto / Nathan Buckly / Adam Goodes
2004 - Chris Judd
2005 - Ben Cousins

You say we need more players capable of winning games off their own boot?!? A little man named nathan brown did that a few times and still didn't get the 3 votes! How he wasn't in the lead up2 rnd 10 i'll never know! A positive is that, we must have a better all round team, not relying on a few players to win us games. Comes from an across the ball effort. Otherwise i have no idea why our players didn't poll very well!

Abba-solutely rapt to see Lids get the votes against Geelong in Round 22.

The Kid just got better and better.

How the dawks got so many votes and won 5 games will never cease to amaze me. I swear it's a hooked on hawthorn phonics conspiracy at the moment. They suck so much but everyone wants to heap praise on how good they are, i think it's pity for those horrible jumpers they wear.

Wasn't it Hawthorn that could amass as many handballs as kicks - maybe cheap frequent posessions suck in these men in *smile*.
