Team for round 1

I thought Collins was our best today, probably kicked four and got a fair bit of it around the ground also. Would like to see him run as hard defensively as offensively, however he was my pick of the day.

Nahas was dangerous too, prob kicked 3-4.

Thommo was good, clean hands, kept his feet, a couple of poor kicks took a little shine off.

Cogs got a bit of it, took a great mark and just missed another one jonno brown style running back with the flight.

McMuffin got an absolute ton of possessions but mainly due to him going backwards and receiving it several times in each play without actually making any progress (Wally will have him straight back in tho).

Jon was average/ok on a HFF but not sure he has much more to offer than that VFL level performance.

Was impressed with the big Browne man, works hard... good luck to the kid.

Connors got a bit of it at half forward, nothing sensational tho.

I would have Thommo or Collo as the next 2 in line for a game based on what I saw today.

Nahas will always kick goals at this level, 50 goals in the VFL last year showed that. Hopefully he can start getting a few at the next level.

If Mcmahon was BOG damn. Want to see Collins, Cogs and maybe Thompson given opportunities over the next few weeks. ???

Just back from the game. Lovely day at coburg as usual.

Saw the last quarter of the ressies and must say I am impressed with Post. Big lump of a lad. Could be a monster size as he matures. Cleve looks a lot lighter and a bit more nimble. Other than a lead and lovely kick goal didn't do much. Didn't notice Gourdis but I see he kicked 5 - good signs. Vickery also looked lively.

Re the firsts pretty much agree with BrisTiger except that I think his man love for the Ranga is coloring his views. I thought our two rucks were very promising but Browne often misjudged his jumps. Smart player though , good below his knees and good mark. I actually thought Patto was better and looked a lot more streamlined and mobile today. I actually watched from half way and Patto surprised me by the elevation he got. Looks to have come on a bit this year but need to see him in the ones to see if the form is illusory. However with Patto and the Ranga's form and Vickery in reserve our ruck strength looks to be on the up.

I'd like to put in congrats to JON. Lovely game, working real hard to offer an option. His ball getting ability as always first class and he is looking to dispose quickly and simply. He still suffers from the fact that his teammates still dont trust him and overlook him a lot, but good 'blue collar' game from Jarrad.

Conversley Connors (who also did do some lovely things) butchered balls left right and centre and went up one handed without too many cat calls from the crowd. Perversely though he would be in front of JON in the queue for a game in the ones due to his X factor up forward.

Macmahon fooled me as I thought we had a promising no 31 promoted from the twos early doors as he did look good early. Still makes too many ordinary decisions with the ball even at VFL level. Second half ordinary.

Cogs looked class but didn't appear to get mega possessions. We did very well in tight though and he might have picked up a few hard ball gets in there. If he pulls up well I would promote him though. Now or never folks!

Thompson good and would not disapoint if promoted.

Nahas very lively and an option as a small forward in the firsts.

Collins terrific - four goals - cool calm composed display.

Thursty gave way a cheapy early on but quite good therefater as was Silvester.

Polak - well he took a hit early and we basically played a man short for three quarters. he looked a million miles away. But he pulled out a great last quarter - goal from a throw in Gary Ablett style - numerous leads and marks and poised delivery. Still think he is a while away but great signs from Graham.

So players putting there hand up for seniors next week IMO are in order - Collins, Cogs, Patto, Nahas and Thomson.

Also JON and Willy not far away if they continue with the solid form. Connors need some real game time and to work on the 1 percenters to round off his game

Any questions - fire away!

I also went down and had a look - took my little boy (8 months old - 1st taste of live footy for him)...

From my observations:

Collins was the pick of the bunch from the RFC listed players - moves well, likes to give it off then moves to create an option as they move the ball forward...a couple of times he dished it off at HB/Centre, then ended up receiving it again across HF...played most of the game in the middle yet still managed to kick 3-4...good game but still needs to improve defensively. Seems to pick the wrong option on occasion also but overall, a good game for mine.

Conners was Conners - I'm a big fan and look forward to his class in the seniors...he kicked a couple, missed a couple, and assisted in at least another 2 or 3...looks a little lacksadaisical at times but liked his game...probably needs another 1 at Coburg but with the dees coming up next week, could possibly get away with playing him...mainly played deep forward today and knows how and where to move to receive the ball...had an early stint in the middle too and seemed to go ok there....we need his class big time - he's wasted at Coburg and unless he's very unfit, bring him in ASAP.

Browne was good also - good tapwork and seems to be one of those players who knows how to give themselves time when in possession of the ball...very impressive for a big man. He has calves the size of my thighs...huge boy! Spent most of the last qtr on the bench and probaby had 50% game time all told. Good effort - is definately an upgrade on gus..

Cogs had a blinder in the 2nd quarter - was everywhere, dished off many a hand ball to set up play including a nice lookaway which resulted in a goal to Conners (I think) in the 2nd...took an awesome pack mark against bigger players in front of goal and kicked truly. Didn't have a great game but definately serviceable...the thing I was amazed with is how different he looks...seems to have slimmed down plenty, changed his hair colour and even seems to have a different running style...took me half a qtr to find him....not far away from a senior gig, another who could play next week although I wouldn't be surprised to see him at Coburg for another week or 2...

Thomson was ok without being great...very slow which could be a problem at AFL level...as we all know, TW loves quick players so not sure where thomo fits into TW's plans...good by hand but very average by foot...seems to look for 20m passes when he does kick it showing a lack of confidence or possibly knows his limits so doesn't try to go long...kicked into the man on the mark from a set shot from 40, had another touched off the boot also...I wouldn't promote him on that game and actually think he needs at least one of Tuck/Foley/Cogs to be absent before he gets a game...

Patto = thought he had a good game...dominated in the ruck from what I saw, winning most of his taps and more importantly, was hitting the ball to advantage. Put it onto a few coburg chests on a number of occassions...don't know much about the frankston ruckman so not sure what quality he was up against...linked up ok around the ground also and only seemed to be going at 3qtr pace although he ain't the quickest player going around...I would give gus 1 more game to show something, then banish him forever and give patto (and down the track Browne) a go....

JON - was good today, definately one of the better games i've seen him play. Marked really well playing as a lead up HF....kicked well also hitting targets with most posessions...would still need to improve to warrant a senior call up and IMO, needs to play at the level he played today for 5-6 weeks running before getting a gig...better signs from him.

Thursty - thought he was good and looked a class above this level...took some nice marks reading the play well, and used the ball well also. Needs to get a more attacking game to his repatoir but I wouldn't hesitate to bring him back in, horses for courses I suppose...

Liddle was good for Coburg - wish we would have rookied him instead of sylvester to be honest (sylvester was good today but has no place in the RFC squad IMO).

Good day all round and a good win by the burgers...saw TW and Royal there, along with Richo, Newman, Rance, King, McGuane, Hislop...

Was Putty out there today for the ones or the twos?

PS - Re some of the Coburg boys , I think Morris was number 17 had a terrific game. Looks to me he could play AFL as a small back - lots of aggro good run and skills.

I think Allan will help the structure as a tall forward - showed good signs.

Carrick has stepped up a notch - got some more strength to go with his ground level skills.

Jordan runs straight at the ball - not sure about the skills.

Carnell soild as ever.

Keogh there only because of 12/10 rule. Tried hard. Post is a monty the regular CHB otherwise.

Nat Carusa - relatively subdued for his standards.

PS Tim Clarke played a solid game kicking can be scrappy but kicked a nice goal form 45 out. - good pick up to replace Shelton. Lidell and Horne very good games.

Putt was in the twos. Looked to be playing wing (only saw a quarter) - moved well for a big guy!

Putt played in the 2s. I'm surprised he wasn't named in the bests. Look at some of my earlier posts in this thread. I thought that, along with Goo, Putty was the best RFC player in the 2s. Playing on the wing, he did some stuff that reminded me of Buddy. Good signs from his.

LOL at my alleged man crush on the big ranga...ok, I admit it but thought he had a great day today.

Anyone seen stats from today? Would love to know how many touches Cogs and Collo had.

Why, here is another player that people have rose clour glasses ith.
Just what has he done?
He will be lucky to be still at the club next year.
Yes he has the game to make it but does he want to put in the hard yards in to make it at the highest level.

I was under the assumption he got injured over-training with Cotchin in the off-season. Is that not correct?
As for "perceived effort". He looked like he was trying last year when on the big stage playing for the seniors and he was carving up the Hawks. I'll trust that form for any player rather than running around for Coburg on cow paddocks in front of 200 people half of which can't see the other side of the ground. Absolute gun who would be a massive upgrade for our senior side and will be a better player at senior level as the quality of players around him is upgraded.

Thanks for the reports everyone. I guess the form of Collins, Cogs, Nahas, McMahon & Thomson will put pressure on the likes of King & Edwards to perform tomorrow. Hopefully they do as it would be a great thing to have blokes performing really well for Coburg but not being able to get into the ones because we're winning and everyone's doing their job. It will be good in a few weeks when we can add Cotchin and Cousins to this mix and even Pettifer if he can get his act together. My biggest concern in what i'm reading is that there are no tall forwards ready to come in to the ones if we need them...

Re tall forwards, Gourdis impressed me in the 2s as did Putt (although he was playing on the wing). Hughes kicked 4. So there are tall fwds coming through.

Or we could persist with Jackson, Tuck, Tambling and co. Connors is exactly the type you persist with. Same with Cotchin and Collins. They've got proper ability.
