I was under the assumption he got injured over-training with Cotchin in the off-season. Is that not correct?

You are correct, by all reports he was flying untill he broke his finger

Some good names in the "thirds" there: Hughes, Vickery, Gourdis, Hislop and Deledio! ( not to mention the great Dean Limbach!)

Why, here is another player that people have rose clour glasses ith.
Just what has he done?
He will be lucky to be still at the club next year.
Yes he has the game to make it but does he want to put in the hard yards in to make it at the highest level.

If you don;t mind I'll put that post in the vault with your choice of Carlton this week in the last man standing comp :hihi

Hi
Long, long, long, long, long time lurker- first time poster.
It was such a beautiful Autumn day I thought I had to go and see Coburg play as I so rarely can.
I thought I would post my thoughts - more on the players than the game itself.
Richmond players-
Willy T - what I really noticed was how much bigger he is. I think he had a solid game and I saw him do other things than just spoiling quite a bit.
Polak - got poleaxed right in front of me in the first Q and I really thought that was going to be the end of him. However he came back on later and I think did quite well - quite a few marks and seemed to be going to the right spots.
Cogs - the play never came over my side of the ground often but from what I could see he was getting it and getting it out. I know VFL is not as fast but I really dont think his lack of pace will be a huge problem even at AFL level. He took a great pack mark and goaled. I dont know if he got 40 possessions again but he did OK
Adam Pattison- I know all the perceived negatives about this guy but he just keeps motoring - up and down the field and never stopped. He took a few marks, missed a goal but I think was very effective. I think richmond might just have to try him at CHF and see what happens. He might surprise.
Adam Thomson - liked his work. In and under and also motored up and down. A couple of clangers but nothing major.
Robin Nahas - I really wish Richmond would just give this guy some time in the seniors. I know he is small and his tackles dont stick but I think if he can get with the pace of AFL he will simply run away from players. Seems to bob up and I think can play midfield as seemed to be up and down the ground as well.
Daniel Connors - I really really wish he had had a proper preseason and was fit to play as he really gives us something. He seemed to be played on starvation half forward flank but just seemed to be there at times to get the goal or get a kick away. There seemed to be less lairizing and more defensive work to me. Get him in the seniors!!!
Andrew Collins - I know he is a pencil but he is a classy pencil. He glides along and gets the ball and hardly made a clanger all afternoon. He is also something I dont think we ever have enough of - a goal kicking midfielder.
Andrew Browne - I can really see why he has gone ahead of Gus. He knows where to go. He taps it really well - it is not his fault his midfielders did not make more of his taps.
And now to some sacrilege - the following two are the most contraversial players for opinion on all message boards but-
JON- I think worth persisting with. He too glides along and motors up and down the field. Nothing brilliant or startling but a solid game and no clangers that I could see ( could have been happening across the ground.)
Jordie- this guy is never going to be the hard at it type everyone seems to want him to be. I think he is a great run and carry , one-two player when he is not pressured. Obviously today he had time to make decisions and I did not see a clanger. I think he is crucial for us when we are up and about and playing more skilled footy.
I for one long for the day when all our CO- players play for us. I think skill levels will really increase.
I know this sounds like an overly rosy review ( sorry dark siders) but really I cant single anyone out as being a dud or shocking etc

Good to hear the positive feedback about JoN, I think a hand just emerged and clutched for air from the grave his AFL career was buried in.

Went to the reserves and seniors at Coburg for the first round.

Coburg Boys

(Best for mine was Jonathon Morris but posted on him in his thread)

Horne...Was his usual self, didn't dominate but contributed strongly and faded in and out of game.

Carnell...Not his best game but a solid one as often in the thick of action, few too many clangers for my liking.

Liddle...Fantastic game, got better as it went on and really came on fire in the last half and was in everything.

Jason Morgan...(The Gazelle as Bobby called him :hihi) Kyabram boy. Solid unit, mature age recruit type, looked really good in a contest, strong hands, moved well for a big guy. One to possibly watch.

Glen Carrick...Looked a real likely type. Smart reader of play, uses the ball reasonably well and has a attacking style of play and good work ethic.

Jacob Hislop...Obvious to tell what family he comes from, hard as nails and likes the tough stuff. Good 1%ers, handy type.

Tim Clarke...Played a handy game, did some clever things and showed a bit. Kept fading out but at the same time kept bobbing back in at the right times and making key plays so not a bad showing.

Matt Deledio...Not overtly impressed myself, did a few handy things. Saw him up close as he watched the seniors right in front of me and while he moves like his brother visually he looks very much like him also. Very strong resemblance and whole Lids family there supporting Matt, including Lids himself.

Ryan Allen showed he could indeed end up being a great foil, not sure he could be a key player in the forward line but could be a very good 2nd/3rd tall. Certainly not a key forward at his height but knows how to take a grab and kick a goal.

Nat Caruso....Dissapointing game by his standards for mine.

Richmond Boys

Polak....Played in 1sts. Got knocked out/stunned in first half, was a bit gut wrenching when you realised who it was (happened on other side of ground to me), was shocked he came back on later and played well enough to kick a couple of good goals, even take a couple of his trade mark marks. His fans who want to see him play would be heartened by his resilience but watching him run around made me feel a little anxious and not sure he should be taking the risk. Came back on with a helmet and while he did a bit after coming on we had a fair bit of ball coming in so he didn't have to work hard, though he did work smart to his credit.

Silvester...Was typical Silverster in the 1's. Great at his level but didn't show anything to suggest he would get a regular senior gig this century.

Putt...(2nds) Actually showed some impressive development. Moved well for a 200+ guy, ran to spots o the ground and to follow play. Impressive around packs and with his handballs, surprisingly quick. Still a long way off but was heartening to see his game. Appears to read the play well.

JON...(1sts) Like the others, have to risk the wrath of the masses and say the best game I have ever seen him play. He took a nice contested mark hands out with a spoiling player all over his back at one stage, moved well, handballs in close where sharp and he found targets by foot and nearly always made the right decision (played HF and was simplified for him as a result). Really played more of a link role than a goal kicking role and did it well.
Never turned it over and the only kick I saw that was not effective was on target but spoiled. Looked a different player, will be interested to see if he can back it up next week.

Vickery..Played in the ruck all day pretty much, was surprised how thin he was seeing him up close after game. Always knew he would have to put on some meat but he most assuredly does need to put plenty on. Still looks a highly promising player, works hard, his second efforts are A grade. Great around packs and in close with his hand balling, started play for the day nicely in the seconds after tapping the ball in the ruck and running on to take a nice mark and kick a nice first goal. Lots of development due but no doubt going to be a fantastic player.

Gourdis...Very impressive. Watched him kicking in warm up before the game and was atrocious, yet in the game he was his typical self. Looked fantasic around the ground, appears to be learning how to read the play. Much improved in his running to spots and reading general play. Kicking still a issue but working hard and developing, was mighty impressed and consider him to have passed Hughes now in terms of who i would prefer get a seniors game next. (That defensive 50 tackle was amazing and a highlight of the day).

Hughes...Dissapointing effort, did his usual turn up and minimal effort performance.

Post...Looks a player, moves well, reads play well and has courage in packs going for marks. Does have a very u and under kicking style and kick in genera direction of play and hope for the best bombing style of our old crap that I hoped to not see recruited into our side. Hopefully they can get that out of him quick.

Nahas...Very clever and his usual deadly self at senior VFL level. Ultimate opportunist thanks to great reading of play and speed.

Connors...Typical connors game. Not one of his best by any means but turned it on in the last quarter (gont increasingly better as the game went on). Took a long time to get going, made some atrocious kicks turn overs in the first half. Best quarter was last quarter. Don;t agree there are issues with his fitness, seems to be a concentration/work ethic prob for me but didn't watch him closely admitably and maybe he got tagged or beaten on the day by his opponent.

Collins...Has to be played, ridiculous he is not already and his game today was all class. Not just a goal kicker but beautiful mover and link man in play...running the ball out of packs (only saw him turn it over badly once), etc. Really impressive game once again and should be rewarded as he is not just knocking on the door but kicking it down only for Wallace to put up a "reserved for McMahon" sign on it.

Browne...Kicking concerned me a bit in this game, made quite a few clanger kicks but loves a contest and certainly contends/works hard. Didn't do enough to get promoted but did do enough to show he is worth persevering with.

Gilligan...Went missing at times but his field kicking was fantastic as was his hands. Regularly irked on here by people who criticise his kicking, nothign wrong with it and made some beautiful passes. Needs to stay at this level and develop more but nice user of the ball. Has great reflexes and ball handling skills under pressure also. Mental side of the game is daunting him a bit I think but will hopefully get over it with experience as at times he showed scintillating vision under pressure or on the run on the other side of the ground.

Pattison was ok, but for mine, didn't notice him that much. Appeared clearly underdone (understandably) and was obviously played for fitness.

Thomson...Great in the packs, kicking was fine field wise, ordinary goal wise. Tough as nails, saw him take some hard knocks and keep coming back or contesting in a stoppage immediately after. To be fair, as one of his biggest fans I was a little disappointed in his game but i think it was more a result of the style of the game. When he was on ground we were dominating in general and not too much stoppages for him to do his thing in and always performed when had to, so a deceptive game for him.

Thursfield...Turned his game around. Was ordinary in the first quarter, reasonable in 2nd and played a great last half. His spoiling and great work to clear the loose ball from danger was evident in the last half.

McMahon...Got a lot of it, some of his passes to be fair were nice and long and hit targets beautifully. However he got a lot of uncontested ball as usual, little pressure at most times and was his usual awful self in close or under pressure. Played the type of game wallace will love so expect him back in next week, but I wouldn't put him back in. Wasn't as effective as he should have been for the amount of ball he got or contests he was "in".

Cogz...Looking really good. Usual smart footballer, tough as nails. Took a very hard collision in a courageous marking contest running with the flight of the ball into a oncoming player. Got straight back up and as he failed to mark chased the ball hard. One of the hardest hits i have heard in footy but he shrugged it off. Got plenty of it and seems to have improved his core strength issues I was worried about last year and posted then about.

Thanks for all the reports guys!

According to the Age today, Cogs got 25 possessions, but McMahon was credited with 41! Don't think Terry will be able to resist that :help

A lot of love for JON, and he did have a good game, but he still made a few JON-esque kicks that I saw. Attempted passes that would have looked a million dollars if they hit their target, but hit the grass a metre or so short and put the intended recipient under big pressure. His contested marking was first class though.

Good win to Coburg yesterday especially after Frankston had threatened several times to claw their way back into the match.
In response to previous posts and my observations yesterday's, thought JoN was OK w.r.t quality of possession. He used the ball well and seemed to find the right option which would suggest decision making has improved. Although, still plays too conservative for an Aboriginal footballer.
As for Polak, I'm not sure if I can agree with the "good comeback" after he was knocked out in the 1st Q. Sure may have kicked a goal, but he was out of sorts overunning the ball, fumbling and mis-timing his leads for 2 quarters and costing Coburg dearly.
On a different note, the Chips and Pies were terrible and their were lots of feral Frankston supporters.

Were the pies warm or cold?

Didn't have the pies but they looked good. The cold VB served in a can and not plastic cup, the barby sausage and onion in bread, the hot chips and cappucinno were spot on!

Actually spoke to the father of the kid who played on Steamer in the twos. He thought his boy went OK and was surprised to see Cleve in the Coburg ressies. Probably trying to judge his boys game he asked if Cleve was any good. Being as diplomatic as possible I said he could play a bit but can struggle to get involved in the play.

Having said that I thought Cleve moved a lot better than I have seen in previous years and seems to be a bit lighter and more athletic. Mind you if you are a state under 18 chf in your fourth AFL season, you should be looking good at coburg 2s

I was only there for the first half, with my one year old, so didn't get to see as much footy as I would have liked, but a couple of observations I made are:
JON and Conners look to have improved their physiques, look, to me, more like AFL players than they did last season.

Patto took a couple of good marks, which I thought was encouraging, mind you his kicking still looks a bit dodgy.

Collins, as many already know, is a beautiful mover. Really looks AFL standard. From the little I saw was probably our best.

Yes, Jordie got a lot of ball, but players like Cogs, Collo, Nahas had a much bigger influence on the game.(while I was watching)

Does anyone have any more detailed info on how well Cogs went? Stats or anything? I so want to see him back!
