Team to meet Geelong at Kardinia Park.

Good post.

The rookie list should not be there for tried and tested back up options.
It should be there to discover the Foley's and Thursfield's of the world.

We have several players of similar type who are at least as capable as Howat.

Sure his work ethic might keep some other footballers honest but I'd much rather be unearthing another diamond in the rough than persevering with a journeyman who is rank pedestrian.
So true. IMO under the spirit of this draft Collard is our only real rookie. Could not believe how we filled our three other spots, especially Howat. Irresponsible drafting considering we need to unearth youngsters and not slow defenders or dubious ruck prospects.

Its been mentioned ad nauseum. Our drafting has left a lot to be desired.
This years rookie list selections demonstrate this fact and also is an "admittance" to what has been regularly discussed in this regard, that is, there are still a lot of holes that need filling and draft for needs/development has been distinctly lacking.

I look forward to Craig Camerons' philosophy on drafting and list management.

Hopefully in 2008 drafts and especially the rookie draft it will be an indicator of where and how we will be heading

Yeah Craig Cameron is a high profile recruiter but he has left holes at Melbourne, he's not necessarily the answer but another experienced head to go with FJ is a bonus. He does like drafting the odd man-child here and there, McLean, Jones, Sylvia were all much more physically advanced than most of their counterparts. Dont think Melb has much in the way of decent KPP's either, possibly less than us.

newman is often off his opponent cos he has run to cover someone elses opponent and no one runs to cover his...that is called "teamwork"..it is a bit of a sore point with some players.......

as for his fitness...he is the fittest he has EVER been...TW did say that newmo has undoubtedly had the best pre season of all the players this year...

i cant wait for the season to start

foley and king got elevated after one year on the rookie list, howat is on his 3rd yr as a rookie and they dont think he deserves a spot on the senior list so why is he still a rookie?
I give him credit for working hard but thats about it

I with you Irockz.
To me, a rookie position should be for a young'un who maybe we weren't sure about drafting onto the senior list so we put them on a rookie to see how they go and to prove themselves.

In my opinion, Howat has had ample opportunity and for the club to leave him on as a rookie after 3 years is just poor.
If Howat was int heir plans for the future he would be on the senior list by now....not blocking the opportunity for us to blood another youngster and potential star.

Yay I have the day off tomorrow!! I can go down and watch the game!!! ;D ;D ;D

GO TIGES!!!

Take lots of notes if you can please, especially about who is winning the center clearances and tapouts.

Jake King Will Thursfield Jack Riewoldt
Joel Bowden Graham Polak Jordan McMahon
Richard Tambling Chris Newman Kayne Pettifer
Matthew Richardson Adam Pattison Brett Deledio
Nathan Brown Cleve Hughes Shane Tuck

Troy Simmonds Kane Johnson Nathan Foley

The rest!

A little from left field but this is how I would like to see them line up against the Cats. Some level of experimentation (we need change don't we?) while fielding close to our strongest side IMO available.

Riewoldt given a run as the third tall down back to add a bit of tude with King. Good for his education, game time, discipline and options if it works.

“Best” experienced users of the ball off the flanks, Polak forced to play tight if fit/Moore to replace if not. Polak, Thursfield, Reiwoldt and Bowden gives us a bit of size (if not strength!) down back.

New leadership group members to show leadership in the middle! Both close to our best users of the ball, Newman to face the music in the centre. Pettifer forced to apply some defensive pressure in his game on the wing.

Marking power across half-forward. Richo almost a dummy CHF (insert gag here), out of the square (reduces Richo centric predictability) but still close enough to goal to cause opposition problems/concerns. Lids to play roaming forward/mid role. Patto to park at CHF and provide contest – best users in Bling, Petts, Newman, Lids feeding off.

Hughes given a run as they key leading forward. Tuck provides much needed defensive pressure/toughness but can mark/find it up forward. Brown the class finisher.

On-ball brigade picks themselves.

First time I’ve done this sort of exercise, worryingly few personal changes from last year.

My turn Elmer

Jake King Will Thursfield Kelvin Moore
Shane Tuck Graham Polak Jordan McMahon
Richard Tambling Chris Newman Joel Bowden
Matthew Richardson Brett Deledio Mitch Morton
Nathan Brown Jack Riewoldt Kayne Pettifer

Troy Simmonds Kane Johnson Nathan Foley

Interchange: , Adam Pattison, Clever, Tiva, Cogs, White, Hyde.

Noticed in the NAB cup loss to Saints that Deledio rotated between deep forward then moved up later (a few lovely turns with pace and delivery to Richo) - given his pace, he will be very hard to match up on.

Still can't find a place for Rains! With Connors, Cotchin, Edwards and co coming through I think opportunities look limited for him.
