Team to meet Melbourne in Cairns

Still no sign of Luke McGuane. Anyone know how far he is away?

I'd really like to see this youngster get a run at CHF. Watching back a couple of games, I was most impressed with how he came on late last season.
Whilst there are questions over his field kicking I think Luke's got more bravado, leap & pace than Hughes and Riewoldt combined at this point.

Could give us plenty at CHF. Certainly worth a go in the trial games anyway.
Disagree. Think he has 3rd tall backman written all over him. (Unfortunately we have a few more of those two). I'm not totally convinced on Luke, but I'd certainly like to see him running around soon to find out for sure.

Trained fully this week so maybe having his first run at coburg.

8 out and out soft pricks. 7 skinny runts. surprisingly just 3 terrible kicks. just 2 genuine inside players. just 3 who regularly commit to 1percenters. not one with mongrel, just one with a physical presence and just 5 genuine talls in that starting 18.sheesh if this is how footys going im giving it away.

Richo's not in the squad.
It'll be interesting to see who plays forward and how we go.

Agree. But looking at Melbourne's squad, I am not sure we will get much of an idea how this weekend's forward line would perform during the season.

McGuane is just another example of a bloke that ticks half the boxes, has a go, is good at the contest and good mark unlike many others at the club.

Yet lacks smarts, and has very poor disposal also lacks size for the positions he was earmarked for sadly like others at the club.

The RFC list is top heavy with blokes who only half cut it imo and thats why they are stagnating and failed to go forward.

Hughes has talent and skill, yet no go in him, no aggro, not as willing as McGuane and as for Schulz i gave up 2 years ago.

Polak has body size, great mark but also lacks physical presence and shoddy by foot also at times.

Problems abound when you look hard enough without rose coloureds on and the results have spoken for themselves over the past 20 years with not much changing.

The likes of Hurley and Naitanui must be looked at fiercly for drafting and the tigers will definately be in a position to grab one if not both of these boys.

On Mcguane he sat in front of me on friday and i tell ya first thing i said to my mate was has this guy put on any size in the last 3 yrs.
Did not seem like he has taken a quantam leap in body size what so ever. He is very strong for his size and hard at it but in order to play key back will need to stack on the weight. Looks like Mcguane will be more of ur running back type but without the skills :headscratch and guys like rance and gourdis will take the key posts hopefully over the coming yrs.

Pretty accurate assessment craigo. Perhaps the suggestion at CHF is a pipe dream, still I'd like to see him tried up front.

The main reasons I'd like to try Luke in attack are:

- As Hopper said we have no shortage of third tall defenders. Moore(jury is out), Thursfield are at least as able and likely ahead of him because of their superior footskills.

- Luke has a real crack. He applies genuine pressure on his opponents at the contest. This is something many of our other young forwards lack. They don't have McGuane's intensity.

- Played the position as a junior but last couple of seasons down back will stand him in good stead.

- Can take a great grab. Has a leap that Hughes particularly would be envious of. He's also got speed and endurance that I am not convinced JR can muster(we'll see).

- Aside from a slightish body type Luke's major pitfall is no doubt his disposal but Richo's been playing up front for years with a dodgy kick, it's less of an issue in the front half than in defence.

I'm no suggesting it will cure all our woes but instead of pidgeon holing McGuane purely as a defender, I'd like to see him tried in attack in a few games this season just to see what he can offer.
If he's a player who can offer something at both ends of the field his value goes up..if he's limited he'll likely be punted at seasons end.

Worth a punt IMO.

How about recruiting some forwards no1 who can KICK!! no2 ARE forwards no3 can intimidate a backman....how many of those boxes do McG and Polak tick?

Melbourne taking up Sandringham. We are going much closer to a round 1 squad.

I am voting no to McGuane up forward push. He is only on a one year deal. Needs to establish himself down back were he has been the last three years. I actually think it's a bit unfair to try and turn into a forward in a contract year when the club has played and trained you as a tall back through your major development years.

I think the options down forward are covered, it's up to the coach to put them in the right spot and come up with a game plan that uses them correctly.

Schulz will play forward even though has has trained as a backman all year, Tambling will play on the wing or half forward even though he should be getting time in the middle. Just another bull***t Wallace day.

:P ??? >:(

Fair enough Scooper but to my way of thinking he needs to be given every chance in that 1 year to see what he's capable of.
Hopefully it's as a success in defence but if that's not working for whatever reason I'd like to see him put forward before the decision is made to prune him from the list.

It would be more unfair not to give him every opportunity.
