Team vs Saints

Maybe it isn't so much about the no 1 pick failing to lead a team to the flag, and more about a team failing to build around it's no 1 pick. Richmond certainly look like they are on the way to failing Lids.

General, I can't believe what I have read, are you serious or is it just tongue in cheek?

I've been repeating myself a bit, I know, so I'll try to make it short. We have massive holes all over our list. We have a heavy reliance on Richo and Brown. We seem to have little to no plan on where we are going to get our goals when these 2 retire. Schulz has been disappointing, Hughes is raw and largely unproven, and who knows where reiwoldt will end up - as a CHF or a CHB. We have no plan for when Simmonds retires (we've seen the consequences this year).

I know the club are playing a massive amount of catch up - with the holes in our list, we'd need to have 4 picks in the top 20 every year to get out of it within a couple of years. I'm patient, I can wait, I know it's unrealistic to be out of the mess by now. But we need to make sure, we're not lacking in any position come 2010-2011. We still have no depth, but that will come as time goes on.

Which bit mate? The bit about clubs not building enough around pick 1, or about richmond not doing enough to support lids?

This bit!

I've read your previous post about the holes in our team and how the club is playing catch up, I agree with that, but I truely think we are travelling in the right direction in rebuilding the team, but with the odd detour here and there. ;D

I reckon, if the club is building to be a premiership contender by 2011, we're behind the 8 ball with the lack of KPP's. We seem to be putting all of our eggs in the one basket. If Hughes or Reiwoldt don't make it at AFL level (it's way to early to say yay or nay) we're in huge strife.

We're not going to be able to trade and get a Polak type story every year.

I think the plan is for Hughes & Riewoldt to make it they are both only 1 & 2 year key position footballers give em a chance mate!!

I'm not writing them off. What I'm saying is, we're pinning all our hope on 2 boys to come up. That's a lot of pressure on them, and if one of them doesn't make it, what then?

I’ve been reading this site for quite a while now, and still can’t believe some of the things that go through some Richmond supporters heads. All this talk of tanking for draft picks is rubbish. I can’t see how anyone believes making sure we get the first pick in the national draft will help us win a flag in the future.

Because every side needs champion players that can step up when the going gets tough, just look at Hird this year.

It is not good for our current players to go out to lose games. How can it be? What sort of confidence does this show in our current crop of players? Trying to install a winning culture – something our club has lacked for a long time – means one thing – WINNING GAMES!!!

Doesn't seem to have hurt Hawthorn. I think maintaining a stable environment and a positive attitude are more important, something Richmond has managed this year. Eventually we have to start winning games though.

And just to have a look at previous drafts and some of the AFL’s current top players:
Judd – pick 3 (2001)
Bartel – pick 8 (2001)
Goodes – pick 43 (1997)
Hird – pick 79 (1990)
Foley (by far our best this year) – rookie draft
Franklin (if all the hype turns out to be true) – pick 5 (2004)

Goodes and Hird will never happen again, the recruiting is too sophisticated for that now. The rest well they are all essentially top 3 players except Bartels who isn't in this company anyway. Oh and Franklin hasn't proved himself yet, all he's shown is talent not whether he can be consistent.

That is the same with most clubs look at the Eagles with no Judd or Cousins not quite the flag side from last year the Bombers with no Lucas or Lloyd Sydney without Hall or O'Keefe etc you just need to keep adding to the list each year & hope you have a good run with injuries.

I would agree with the General in that I can't see us ever getting enough gimmie picks to build a premiership team.

I just don't see enough of the signs yet to indicate that we are going to be anything other than a mid-ranking club, even after our kids grow up a bit. Where are our next generation of game breakers to replace Brown, Richo and Bowden?

Thursfield, Foley and Delidio are a way off being a Judd, Cousins and Wirripunda or a McLeod, Riccuito and Goodwin.

Don't think Foley & Deledio are that far off check Axels number this year & Deledio I think is having his best season!!

Tonight will be a good test to see how we have developed the Saints still have a good midfield Ball Hayes Harvey Del Santo Baker Montagana & the Clarke brothers.

Watch tonight and watch round 22. That should show us what direction we are heading. I'm also looking forward to the Don's match as the last one is still fresh in my mind.
