Bit of a circle jerk going on here. The cartoon depicts Williams using stereotypical 'sambo' features which are racist stereotypes, plus it depicts Osaka as a blonde white girl. Pretty easy to see why the outrage has occurred.
Pretty easy to see the outrage if one is hellbent or looking for controversy everywhere and an opportunity to be pious.

I'm not of African descent so I have no real understanding of how Knight's cartoon would be taken as.

I don't get the "sambo" reference being used to describe the cartoon's offensiveness. I thought that was an obselete, slightly less pejorative form of the 'n' word? Haven't heard it since I was a kid.

Osaka looks brown to me in the cartoon.....by the way, yes she does have a blond pony tail in real life too. But then cartoons are never an accurate portrait of a person per se. They are a satirical, laconic depiction, exaggerating features of that individual. For example the Kyrios cartoon a few days prior with his enormously exaggerated ears. Cartoons of Mick Jagger have enormous lips and tiny slit eyes and so forth.

The accusation that Osaka is drawn incorrectly seems odd.

As cartoons are usually drawn to exaggerate ones features, what might be of assistance is that those that are most critical draw Serena in an acceptable cartoon form to indicate what is appropriate.

It does seem that one of the most petulant displays seen on a sporting arena is being masked and excused by a myriad of reasons - perhaps some that are valid but many that are not.

If Serena wants to play the sexist card, why do things like this keep happening to her? It's because she's a bad sport and chucks a tantrum whenever anything doesn't go her way. She also smashed her racquet which is a code violation every day of the week no matter who does it. No one mentions the lineswoman in the 2009 US Open, the one she threatened to take the *smile* ball and shove it down her *smile* throat! She was fined for that, too, although like this time it was a drop in the bucket compared to what she makes. She should be suspended, maybe stop her from competing at the next Slam, or next year's US, it obviously brings out the worst in her.

I think Andre Agassi said it best a long time ago when a tennis player was carrying on like a petulant child.

'they should use just a little of their prize money to buy some perspective'

Serena, for whatever reason, seemed to well and truly lose the plot.

It shouldnt, and wont, taint a magnificent career though.

everyone loses the plot from time to time

The cartoon is clever on multiple levels, as these things often are, in its depiction of the umpire as a victim of Williams' bullying. Remember, he was banished from the trophy presentation and was not allowed to receive the customary recognition due to the loser's inciting of the crowd against him.

Serena’s racist attitude to this poor man of Hispanic heritage was outrageous......

I always loved Jeff Hook's cartoons back in the day when a paper was gold to have and read.

Mark Knight is also funny but I can't remember why he kept on drawing the little pig in the background every time. Was it something to do with Keating as PM around the time Knight took over from Hook?

I always thought he used the pig to explain the cartoon to his slower readers.

The HS is making a stand. Not unhappy if this episode becomes a public battleground against creeping communism.

Here's a little light viewing for the Serena worshippers. The defender of women's rights in all her nobility!

It's OK to cringe.

She,ll just say it wasn’t her, it was the people who wrote/made the terribly unfunny skit.

You should note that those who think the cartoon is racist do not necessarily think Serena is in the right, like me for instance. I think she has been a bad sport for her career and she's just been smart enough to realize that displaying it is not good PR. The cartoon is still racist IMO though.
