He got hurt playing for the club - the club owns him till he gets his knee right - simple as that.

Yes a one year contract, yep it doesn't have to be for much either but he gets rehabilitated.

The injur 'em and drop 'em strategy is for absolute gits - I'll let you guys nominate yourselves on that score
It's not a reco, if it were earlier in the season he'd come back at some stage. I bet the club is paying for the surgery and will cover any rehab he needs, but if he can't do what he's paid to do properly then there isn't a lot of point in hanging onto him.

Agreed, rather see an extra draft pick for the future frankly. Don't get me completely wrong, Gas gave us a few good years (albeit on more money and for longer than I for one wanted), but he's only going to be slower and can't teach others kicking skills ;) There just must be better alternatives than another contract surely................ ???

Re: gaspar

Lets not forget he was playing well when the club offered him a high priced long term deal to save him going west. To his credit he has over the last two seasons of his backended contract voluntarily taken around 150k a year pay cut.

If nothing else, he deserves a full pre-season injury free and one year deal.

Ridiculous comment.

Players are well compensated for what they do because injury can end their careers at any stage.

Many a career has been cut short by injury.
The RFC is not a hospital where you get paid to stay until you get better.

If a player's career is over due to injury then sure its over I am not that stupid though I may have stated it like that.

If you don't know whether the guy will be able to pull through or not then I am implying some responsibility for seeing the guy through his injury. We did it for Hilton for example and even for Draga and Blumfiled we only axed them after they had proven their mobility/athleticism was permanently compromised. Coghlan, Thursfield and Newman may never be the players they were or could have been but we don't know yet whether they will sufficiently recover. Do we axe them post their operations so that we can clear the decks and our facilities for players who haven't had a serious career threatening inury or do we rehabilitate them and then see where they get to? Moore and Roach and even Hartigan to a lesser extent have been touted as being in the firing line at the end of this year but have been so injured in 2006 it would appear difficult to judge whether they could have "made it". What should we do with them? Yes hard decisions have to be made but I have an aversion to sacking guys on crutches due to the equivalent of a "workplace injury".

I think if he is fit that he should play one more year with Thursfield at CHB backline would look like this

Newman *smile* Kellaway
Bowden Thursfield Polo?

if wehad some decent young kpd on the list you know youngsters who have been in the system for 3 or 4 yrs we wouldnt be debating if we should hang onto this dud for another yr.boy our recruiting or list management has been crap in recent yrs.

Gas is not a long term solution and every year you hold on to him is another lost opportunity.

I would prefer Luke McGuane to get the gig.

Sounds like Gas is out of gas & will be out of the club at season's end.

who'll take his spot next year?

I myself was in favour of giving him a low end 1 year deal for next year as security for Thursty returning and our other defenders

tend to agree. methinks he'll play on 07

Look that's fine but lets not do to McGuane what Hawthorn has done to Zac Dawson

Stop sitting on the fence Claw. Should we keep him or not?

It's hoped that the coaching staff have a bit more sense than that.

Personally, the dilemma occurs because the club has not been able to provide for a situation for when its key defenders retire.

The club has a choice:
1. Retire Gaspar and go into 2007 without a FIT and reliable replacement for him.
2. Groom either an already existing defender or a new recruit to take over the position, with Gaspar playing an emergency role.

Just a reminder, these are our current defenders:
A Kellaway   190   31, been in the twilight zone for 3 years
Gaspar   193   30, been 3 years since he wrecked his knee
Hall   196   27, the yearly speculation on this guy must wreck his confidence
P.Bowden   191   25, flanker in defence
Moore   190   23, juniors like Polo & Thursfield have already gone past him
McGuane   192   20, yet to dominate VFL footy
Thursfield   190   20, still in recovery from knee surgery, the worst type of knee injury

Basically you can run down the list, right down to the 20yos, and Thursfield is the only one that gives a good argument as a key defender, and he would be an undersized one.

The problem has stuck out like a sore thumb since both Holland & Gaspar wrecked their knees in seasons 2002 & 2003 respectively. Yet in that time, the drafts of 2003, 2004 & 2005 we have seen more than 20 new players introduced to the RFC, yet only 2 of those 20 were key defenders. Both were 190-192cms, which is 3rd tall size anyway.
It's damning of the Tiger recruiting policies of 2003-2005.

Hopefully in 2006 we shall see 195cm possible defenders being drafted to fill a MASSIVE void.

a pretty good watertight analysis there Phantom

i think the last two drafts have been OK but i defer to you better understanding than mine of this subject area.

it's hard to disagree with you on the drafting in 2003 when rather than browny (yes he is a superstar) we could have kept pick 6 and drafted bradley who is a big promising defender.
same with our 2nd and 3 rd rounders.
Anyone but Gilmour with hindsight,
Roachy could have been rookied
--- I don't mind jacko
enough said about Tuck and raines
Arch was a reasonable gamble for the last pick in the draft
but with Morrison, Fletcher, Weller and marsh we were clutching at straws
