Around the time when Terry took over he had the following to say:

"I've heard Steve Moneghetti several times. I liked very much his assessment that if he came 17th in a race then that's where he stood at that time in the world," Wallace said "It didn't matter if he had a cold and should have been higher. He was 17th until he proved he was something different. We are aiming for the finals but if we finish ninth, then that's us until we prove to the world we're better."

...........OR WORSE!

So right now, Richmond are 16th, no better.

I also recall Terry last year saying he felt the team was playing better and just not getting the results, or something to that effect. He might have decide soon which it is to be - 16th or just better than we look ;)

I think the "being quiet" theme this pre season may be because Terry has told the group they are 16th until they prove otherwise.

While he has said we played below ourselves he has also said we must be quiet because when you finish 16th you should have nothing to say until you do better.

He's not contradicting himself if that is what you're implying.

One philosophy I like from Bill Parcells (future hall of fame NFL coach for those who may not know) is that things 'are what they are'.

There is absolutely no point for a coach to talk about potential / reputation etc much better of for a coach to focus soley on performance.

If you finish 16th that's because that is where you are at - there is nothing to gain by saying you are better.

I certainly am implying it!

I had forgotten his earlier comments, and when I re-read it struck me that waht he was saying in the closing games of 2007 was at odds with the comments he admired. Doesn't mean he has to endorse the comments of Monners, but I heard him admire the comments loud and clear.

I am also implying, like you are now arguing, that over the break there may well have been reflection and acceptance. Richmond is 16th until it proves otherwise. I was just so surprised it took him so long to realise it or verbalise it - he's smart - but maybe not as smart as I rate him (that's more my problem than his by the way ;) ).

February / March is the pre-season of hope. This is one year I'm not getting carried away. We are the 16th best team until we prove otherwise >:(

PS...........thanks for the link Hanny - good reading and reminding

I thought these two bits were interesting from that article from shiny new 2004..

The attitude now seems to be a year or two of pain for regular long-term gain.

No mention of years 3 & 4!!

Let's look at last year for example. The Tigers had eight picks, as many as this year, and chose three players from other clubs: Simon Fletcher, Shane Morrison and Luke Weller.
None of them made an impact.

McMahon, Morton, Collard, Cartlidge? :help

List management made Cartledge a needs selection, Collard im not unhappy with and worth a crack on the rookie list, he may surprise he may fail but worth a shot.

McMahon -no - wouldve preferred Pears or Selwood or Maric.

Morton well we'll see how he goes, and as for re rookying Howat my thoughts are well documented.

Wallace has changed tack so many times along with Miller they dont know whether they are coming or going i reckon.

Two efforts have stood out both from Wallace .

Didnt rate Schulz as a commentator yet 4 years later Schulz is still at the RFC after giving nothing.

Wallet didnt rate Howat as good enough not tough enough and limited yet re rokkies the guy after sacking him twice .

Go Figure.

I don't believe he has contradicted himself

When he said the team were playing better but not getting the results, that was exactly the case, but he never said we were any better than 16th just playing better than we were previously but still not winning games.

apart from one short period i dont believe the team has played better than what frawley had them going. the big difference is the amount of kids on the list.

Definitely had them playing better before Brown was injured.
Unfortunately whilst Browniy's leg has recovered I'm not yet convinced Wallace's game plan has. Seemed there was a lot of eggs in 'Terry's triangle'.

Big test for Terry this year. Big test.

Sure is, but I have a feeling he is going to pass it. I have a funny feeling that we might see our list take a big leap in a few areas, enough to make us more than competitive against non-top 8 sides. We'll finish just in or outside the 8, and everyone will marvel at the turn around.

The problem will be the year after.

One could argue that Richmond, this year, are premiers, until other clubs prove otherwise.

And Monners was always the next marathon winner, you will be the next lotto winner................go figure ;D
