I like seeing players play their entire career in one number. Think of Nathan Foley who wears the number 41. When a lower number came up, he had the chance to change his number. I'm glad he didn't as it makes this number his. Ironically he is now a strong chance to captain Richmond, although I am sure he would willingly change his jumper for the 17.

What I would like to see is either

a) Let the captain keep wearing their original number, and have a small 17 on the front of the jumper.
b) Make the captain wear the 17 on the back, and have their original number small on the front.

I don't mind the sound of option B....sort of best of both worlds with a level of recognition to the player's real number.

Great idea keeping #17 for the captain, though reserve the player's old number just in case.

RFC must never, ever forget its traditional working class, mongrel roots, and the number 17 symbolises that. Captain Blood was a legend and I am lucky enough to have heard about his exploits from my father who watched him play many times at Punt Road. He was respected and feared throughout the league, his courage and determination unmatched.

His ability was almost overshadowed by his famous, "take no prisoners toughness" but he was an incredibly talented footballer as well as a great leader. To be captain of our great club is a honour and a privilege, and to be given the number 17 is not only a symbolic reminder of that but also a link to our history.

I think it's one of the best initiatives our club has shown in recent times and fans from other clubs are both respectful and a little envious of our new tradition.

Not a fan. I like players to forge their own identity in a number. Jack doesn't need any more reverance at RFC ... he is already top of the tree and has the B&F named after him, a Foundation named after him and a big bronze statue of him outside Punt Road Oval.
