The debut of Cotchin today has led me to look at each of the young boys taken early last year.
Clearly each of the first 4 boys have done exceptionally well.

1 CARLTON MATTHEW KREUZER
2 RICHMOND TRENT COTCHIN
3 WEST COAST CHRIS MASTEN
4 MELBOURNE CALE MORTON

Unfortunately a Stingray may have temporarily laid low a 5th from doing as well.

5 WESTERN BULLDOGS JARRAD GRANT

The next 3 have all debuted, with Palmer clearly as good as the top 4.

6 ESSENDON DAVID MYERS
7 FREMANTLE RHYS PALMER
8 BRISBANE LIONS LACHLAN HENDERSON

9 ST KILDA BEN MCEVOY
10 ADELAIDE PATRICK DANGERFIELD
11 SYDNEY PATRICK VEZSPREMI

For a no.12, Rioli has had an immediate impact. Although he is assisted by such a strong Hawthorn team.

12 HAWTHORN CYRIL RIOLI
13 WEST COAST BRAD EBERT
14 MELBOURNE JACK GRIMES
15 KANGAROOS ROBBIE TARRANT
16 PORT ADELAIDE MATTHEW LOBBE

Geelong chose wisely with their #17, a 21yo boy, AFL ready, that went straight in to fill a hole.

17 GEELONG HARRY TAYLOR
18 RICHMOND ALEX RANCE
19 WESTERN BULLDOGS CALLAN WARD
20 WEST COAST TONY NOTTE
21 MELBOURNE ADDAM MARIC
22 WEST COAST SCOTT SELWOOD
23 ESSENDON TAYTE PEARS
24 FREMANTLE CLAYTON HINKLEY
25 BRISBANE LIONS TOM COLLIER

Of course, the younger taller boys will take a bit longer, but it's still interesting to reflect on the significant debuts of quite a few in a relatively short time.

C'mon Dees, surely Adam Maric has already done enough for Sandy to warrant his debut with Melbourne?

very early to call.

Rioli the stand out. But 3 years from now couldn't give us total different resultant

No doubt!

Look at Jared Roughead from Hawthorn of the 2004 draft.
For 2 years people scratched their heads over him.
Certainly worth, every bit, his #2 spot now.

It's still interesting to look at those who've had an immediate impact.

Was tough to take watching Roughead & Franklin today.
They are an awesome combination up front for the Hawks.
Roughead is coming on in leaps and bounds.

Come back to the old saying a good tall is better than a small any day.

That's what Dad always said.

And he also said that in a close game, it's the team with big marks that usually win the last quarter.

for me those 25 just go to show how important it is to hang onto early picks. people say lottery or fools do anyway. the draft science is becoming more and more exact each yr.

Very impressed with Trent Cotchin yesterday, although it'll be interesting to see how Callan Ward turns out.

I would say of the games played so far, the top five performers have been (in order);
1. Rioli
2. Harry Taylor
3. Palmer
4. Morton
5. Kreuzer/Cotchin

Would have thought that Palmer was as obvious as you could get in the recruting science that he would impact straight away....

LOL at all the praise Rioli gets.

if he was playing for melbourne or essendon he would be getting laughed at

Yup, Rioli is the cream on top of a very good team nothing more. I'd say Kreuzer no. 1 followed by Palmer then Morton. Palmer has dropped off a bit though.

Clayton Hinkley will be one to watch for mine.

If you leave Cotchin out of the equation (he has only played one game), I think the best debutant so far has actually been Masten. There is a lot to like about him, even in a team doing it tough at the moment.

Early days, but Kreuzer has a lot to prove in my opinion. Kennedy has been playing really well for the Eagles, but I believe that in the long run, Carlton would have been better served by Cotchin and Kennedy in their team as opposed to Kreuzer and Judd.

Think you are right - there was a lot to like about Kennedy yesterday and Cotchin has much more in him than Judd timewise

And that's exactly what a lot of them said. Roli too given the team and position he plays has to be a favorite for a good start.

For mine Morton's been impressive to average 15 touches in such a bad side while looking like a stick insect.

In the NFL they don't even think of evaluating drafts until after three years

while he would struggle to get the same assists and goals as he is now in a good side he's defensive pressure is quality and would help in any team

he is playing fp because thats where he fits atm but i can see him playing hbf or even on ball in the future

McEvoy for St Kilda will play very soon. May take the G-Trains spot this week.

Don't forget people, that Cotchin has had zero preseason. None. Amazing. He is class.

I have driven the bandwagon since this time last year it has paid off. ;D
