During 2007, we've spent alot of time comparing the Tiger list & teams to those of various other clubs.
Now it has come down to the GF with, of course, only 2 teams - Geelong & Port - making it.
Looking at the 2 sides there seem to be many things in common with both teams & what some of us consider to be characteristics of premiership teams.
What I noticed, in no particular order, were:
1. That both defences had 3 players well over 190cms.
Geelong has Harley, 193, Scarlett, 192, & Mackie, 192. Port has Pettigrew, 193, Thurstans, 196, & Chaplin, 196.
Note, that Egan, 196, is out of the Geelong side injured.
Also note, Port has Wakelin, 192, on the bench for insurance.
2. Each side is going into the game with at least two ruckmen.
Geelong has Ottens, 202, & King, 201. Port has Brogan,200, & Lade, 199.
3. The weights of the players are generally just above the last two digits of their height. The only variation tends to be with younger, less-developed, players.
4. Both sides have tall spines.
Geelong, remembering CHB Egan is injured - Scarlett, 192, Milburn, 189, Bartel, 187, Mooney, 195, Ablett, 196.
Port - Thurstans, 196, Chaplin, 196, Cornes, 183, Tredrea, 194, Westhoff, 199.
5. Both sides have arguably their best players at CHF.
Geelong - Cam Mooney, Port - Warren Tredrea.
6. Both sides have plenty of runners that can rotate through the midfield.
Geelong - Bartel, Ling, G.Ablett, Stokes, Selwood, Corey, Enright, Byrnes & Kelly.
Port - K.Cornes, C.Cornes, S.Burgoyne, P.Burgoyne, Salopek, Rodan, Pearce, Cassisi, Boak, Logan & Symes.
7. Very hard to find a hole in either side.
Will make for a classic GF. I hope it lives up to the expectation.
Your observations of the 2 GF sides are gratefully invited.
